McGrady: "I don't think I could score 81 points in a video game"

The NBA has better athletes today than it ever had. They are bigger, stronger, quicker. One thing they are not is meaner and tougher. Kobe Bryant, for example, would not have scored 81 points against anyone in an earlier era, according to Magic Coach Brian Hill. "I don't know if players think the same way as they did 20 years ago,'' Hill said. "Back then, Kobe probably wouldn't have still been in the game to do it. He might have had a couple stitches in his lip, or a busted nose, or a cut over an eye. I just don't think a team would have let him do it back then.'' At least one throwback player in today's game agreed with him. "I'd have fouled out,'' Minnesota Timberwolves star Kevin Garnett said. "Not to hurt Kobe or anything, but I take a lot of pride in being a defender. What he did was unbelievable, but at the same time, as a defender, you've got to draw a line in the sand.''

Tracy McGrady of the Houston Rockets never has had much problem scoring, but like everyone else, he was left in awe of Bryant's performance. "I don't think I could score that much in a video game,'' he said. "There are nights I've taken 30 shots and been fatigued. To take 46 and 20 free throws, and end up with 81, I just couldn't believe it.''

According to online booking agent SportsInteraction.com, the odds of Bryant's improving on his 81 points this season are 2-1. The odds of him hitting 100 this season are 15-1.

Knicks Coach Larry Brown actually told the New York Post this week that refs don't give New York the usual home-court advantage because NBA execs regularly attend its games. "It's hard to coach here because every time a referee comes here it's like an auditioning,'' he said. "Those guys have a difficult time refereeing at our place. It has a negative effect on us more than anybody.''

A Final Thought: How long before Ron Artest has his first blowup in Sacramento?

Somebody needs to tell TMac that his career high in assists is 2 behind Kobe. And that those 15 assists were done in a game sans Shaq with a starting lineup which also included Fox, Madsen, Samaki Walker and Derek Fisher. And they need to make sure that the primary player he was traded for matched 15 as their career high this past week.

Now there's something I'd like to hear as a TMac qoute...."yeah, I told my teammates they better take it up a notch...I don't care about the 81 but I'm smashing Kobe's assist total." :)

I think McGrady meant that HE himself couldn't physically do it. Hence, the reference to his arms falling off taking 30 shots. Glad to see you're not having back spasms. ;) :D
