http://www.latimes.com/news/la-ex-coffee2feb03,0,542430.story McDonald’s beats Starbucks in coffee smackdown By David Colker, Times Staff Writer 11:37 AM PST, February 2, 2007 In the ultimate coffee smackdown, it was yuppie Starbucks vs. Ronald McDonald. And the clown won. Consumer Reports magazine said today that in a test conducted at two locations of each emporium, its tasters found McDonald's coffee to be "decent and moderately strong" with "no flaws." On the other hand, the Starbucks brew "was strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open." The March issue of the magazine, due out Monday, thus advises, "Try McDonald's, which was cheapest and best." Actually, not all that much cheaper. McDonald's now charges $1.35 for what the magazine considers a "medium" sized cup of Joe. Starbucks gets $1.55 for about the same size cup. But of course, McDonald's has yet to offer half-cap lattes and it's hard to imagine Ronald in basic barista black. Other fast-food coffees in the test included those from Burger King ("tasted more like hot water") and Dunkin' Donuts ("inoffensive"). No matter how much McDonald's revels in its win of the taste test, the company might be hard-pressed to use it in promotions. Consumer Reports, which takes no advertising, strictly prohibits companies from using its findings in ads. david.colker@latimes.com
Yeah! Consumers don't know anything about the things they consume! Who cares what they/we think!!! To hell with them, let the corporations tell us what is good and what isn't!
the best coffee is ground at home... but if I have to pick something up.. I usually choose the wild bean stuff at BP.
Their last issue said Behr Premium Plus was the best paint. I've used the paint twice and both times it required 5 coats of paint to get a somewhat complete coverage look - and that was on top of 2 coats of tinted primer. It's the only brand of paint I will never buy - even if it's cheap - which it's not. Why waste that much time, work and paint when I can get better results from a can of Glidden.
The only coffee I get is the large iced coffee at Dunkin Doughnuts for around $2. It's like the size of a Big Gulp. Many bathroom breaks follow...
I always get the Double Chocolate Choclate Chip frapuccino from Starbucks. Coffee, Chocolate, Whip Cream, choclate sprinkles and chocolate syrups.. Now theres a recipe for Diabetes. Drink about 2 of those a day, that will put some hair on your ass.
I personally think McDonald's has the worst coffee, Starbucks is okay but way overrated IMO. Lee's Sandwiches makes the best iced coffee if you ever get a chance to stop by.
really? I think mcdonalds is pretty good for the most part. starbucks is good but it is so inconsistent you never know what you are getting. I think the best coffee I have had was at vienna coffee in houston. very small coffee shop out in west houston. I don't know what it is but the flavor is just extremely full and I don't know how they do it.
Up here there's a McDonald's with a McCafe in it (it's right next to the McD headquarters). It's sort of like the McD version of starbucks. I've had several different coffees there, including their version of the frappuncino, and various iced coffees. I don't think I've ever had anything there that's as good as the stuff at Starbucks.
I don't drink coffee out much because most suck anyway; only would drink it for the caffeine fix. As for the 'burnt' taste, it is well established that Starbucks dark-roasts their beans and that a certain group dislikes it intensely and others love it. If they were fair and balanced they would point that out. I do drink cappuccinos out a lot and Starbaucks performs admirably well. Rarely do you get the bitter swill from there that's the hallmark of a cr*ppy barista.
Not suprised by the results. Starbucks offers a semi hangout and study setting more than quality coffee. The fraps are okay, pretty much gonna get the same taste and blend at each locale. I prefer regular ol' 7-11 coffee in the morning anyways. I pour it myself, no crowds, no having to say 'venti'.
Uhh...for anybody who questions Consumer Reports' opinion, maybe you should study the title of their magazine just a little bit longer.
