http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/10/mccain_denounces_pitchforkwave.html What is his motivation? Trying to salvage his image now that the election cannnot be salvaged?
Props to McCain, but damn, they booed him when he said that they don't need to be scared of Obama being president??? The republicans need to separate themselves from these people.
Respect +1 for McCain. Telling the audience is one thing. When will he tell Palin and Steve Schmidt to stop using deceptive and dirty ploys that throw oil into the fire?
I'm glad McCain did tell the audience this time. Good for him. I guess he's seeing up close what happens with the kinds of tactics he's been using.
Might this also be a case of "too little, too late"? The damage has been done. The republican campaign appealed to the xenophobic wack jobs in their party, and I don't think they're going away anytime soon now...
Glad to hear this. The McCain I've admired over the years never had a problem telling people what they didn't want to hear. I hope he's turned the page on anger and makes a strong, honorable rush to the finish line. I want him to receive universal respect when he retires from the Senate in 2 years. After the last 2 months, the next 4 weeks will go a long way in determining that.
I think it just hit McCain that if some of these loonies do something wacky, and its looking more and more likely that they might, everything will come crashing down on him. Media and public, save the fanatic right wingers, will blast him for creating this mess. No one in congress or senate would want to associate with McCain either. And its not like these shenanigans are helping McCain anyways. All its doing is turning his supporters into angry mobs, while the independents are headed the other way. McCain has dug himself a hole out of desperation. He has 3 weeks or so to get out of it. I am not even talking about winning the election.
Wow. It took a few days but McCain did the right thing. The thing that politicians from both sides of the aisle have been asking him to do. It really is too bad that the crowd responded the way they did. I actually feel sorry that McCain seems to be in a no win situation. If he tries to run a smear campaign then he angers everyone from Democrats to Independents to other Republicans. If he tries to run a respectful campaign then he gets booed and yelled at by the Limbaugh's of the world and the lynch mobs that have been forming over the past week. There's nothing he can do right now that won't piss people off. And those are people he needs to vote for him to win the election.
This is the McCain so many of us respected for so long. It is "America first" type of behavior from him. The motivation could be from three sources or a combo: 1. Purely recognizing how bad the irrational fury is for the nation. 2. Recognizing that these rallies will drive away independents. 3. Recognizaing that, in the event he loses, the nation will need to heal and get behind its leader as much as possible. I respect all three, though #2 is more self-serving.
The McCain ticket is the one who started this mob mentality, now he's trying to denounce it. I'm glad now he's at least trying to calm it down, but I've been deeply disturbed by some of the things shouted by the crowds over the last few days.
Better late than never. I wonder what these idiots think after McCain tells them to stop being such despicable toolbags? They're probably thinking, "Oh, John HAD to say that.. there's cameras here! Damn PC Libruhl medias!!!!!11"
Anybody notice how when Obama, or any other person (esp at the DNC), brings up McCain, and compliments him, people clap and cheer with approval? Why is the other side of the isle so full of vile hatred?
Too little too late. His campaign is over, but the damage is done. Had McCain run on who he was back in 2000....and never played into the Rove tactics, and upheld his word to be respectful from the get go...he might be more competitive in this election now.
I guess part of the problem is that the crowds are getting mixed messages from McCain. Here's what McCain's campaign said when Obama denounced the ridiculous outcries and violent threats by the crowds at the campaigns. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/10/10/labor-leader-asks-mccain-to-denounce-supporters-outbursts/ So on one hand McCain is is doing the right thing. On the other hand his campaign is attacking Obama for speaking to the issue of these frenzied McCain supporters.
You even see it on this board from people like George, basso and Iroc, who try their best to demonize Obama. It’s just a lack of respect and why most democrats think that republicans are evil, which is very sad.
It is his own fault, he is the one authorizing all these smear ads, what did he think would happen? I am glad he did it, but dang, he should never have done it in the first place. Obama has been 2 steps ahead of him the entire election......that speech he gave today about coming together.....very Presidential. DD
