John McCain Agrees: “If we don’t reenact the draft I don’t think we will have anyone to chase Bin Laden” Today at a townhall meeting, an audience member praised Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for his vow to “follow bin Laden to the gates of hell.” After a long question about veterans’ care, the questioner said she believed we needed to reinstate the draft, to which McCain seemed to readily agree: QUESTIONER: If we don’t reenact the draft, I don’t think we’ll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell. [Appaluse] MCCAIN: Ma’am, let me say that I don’t disagree with anything you said. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aRMFwXGBMfI&color1=11645361&color2=13619151&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aRMFwXGBMfI&color1=11645361&color2=13619151&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Wow -- that should air over and over from now until November 4. What a nutty thing to say. I just can't truly believe that he believes that.
They'll find someway to spin it to where he meant the exact opposite. But yeah, if they don't harp on this from tonight on, it's a huge mistake. What a dumb, dumb thing to say.
McCain is such a walking senior moment. My bet is that he did not hear the entire question/comment and will submit a retraction later.
no thats not the case...I have seen him talking about possibly re-instating the draft in another video posted by mc mark... This was not random, he told a town-hall somewhere that a draft is not out of the question if we have "other wars"
I agree. The military is seriously strained and a draft might both call attention to the actual price of these wars, and give the troops a chance to lick their wounds and meet their children. I'd do something like a mandatory civil service where current military truck drivers and cooks are pushed up towards front line duty, and draftee's take over.... even though I recognize this is a non-linear battlefield in many areas.
That's my guess. I stopped paying attention halfway through and i'm sure he did as well. It didn't sound like a question, just one long winded comment. He put the microphone up to his a face a few times and she kept talking. I assume he agreed with her statement on the treatment of the veterans.
While we agree on a lot of military/security issues, lpbman (if I'm remembering correctly. I still think we should build smaller aircraft carriers!), we couldn't possibly disagree more on a Draft. I am completely and utterly against it and will vote against anyone who is for it. If Obama came out tomorrow and said he supported a return to the draft, I would vote against both him and McCain. Guess I would write someone in, not that I expect Barack to ever support a draft. Just sayin'! Impeach Bush/Cheney.
Well... obviously the first choice is to bring the troops home to alleviate the strain, and the second choice is to increase the size of the volunteer force. But seeing how those two choices have failed so far and the tolls exacted from those failures; and if McCain is going to keep large numbers of troops in Iraq and austencibly surge in Afghanistan... I don't see any other path besides the end of the U.S. military as we know it.
We spend what it takes to expand and retain our superb volunteer military. Whatever it takes. If it requires raising taxes, then we raise taxes. Short of a national security crisis approximating WWIII, that's the path I would chose and it is the path I want my President and Congress to chose. High technology and an increase in our highly trained volunteer force should be able to handle our needs, assuming another President, or the one we have, doesn't start another unnecessary war filled with even more unintended consequences, encouraging oligarchies like Russia to see how far they can push and get away with it. Looks like they can push pretty hard. Think Russia would have been so bold had we not had so much of our power bogged down in Iraq? I don't. In my opinion, Bush couldn't have set Putin's dessert table any better if he had tried. Impeach Bush/Cheney.
If we weren't going to be in Iraq for the next 100 years, maybe we could allocate some of those resources to chasing Bin Laden to the gates of hell. Maybe we could give people more incentive to enlist in the military. Maybe something like, I don't know, an upgraded and improved GI Bill . . . uh . . . wait . . . never mind But with Iraq and Afghanistan and upcoming wars in Iran and Russia, McCain's Military is going to be spread pretty thin.
No need to allocate resources to chasing Bin Laden. McCain's already made clear that Pakistan is a safe-zone for him beyond the gates of hell, so he's good.
I dislike McCain, but seriously, when some crazy old woman starts making statements like she was, sometimes it's better just to shut her down with one blanket statement.
lol, death sentence. if obama and the democrats don't pound him on this, they're stupid. mccain cannot be our president. if he does become president and re-instates the draft, i think he'd be assassinated before the draft even happens.
I agree. She made about 30 statements, and I don't really think McCain trying to be like I think exactly like you. McCain's statement was sort of like "I'm sorry and I know what your talking about." But it was not like, yes we need a draft. It seemed more like "I know that our Veterans need better healthcare and services." It can be spun both ways and he was stupid for making a statement that could be spun like that, but I don't in that statement he meant "we need a draft" Now I have heard him allude to its possibility in other public appearances, though I have no links to those.
Oh hell no. Never should a man be forced to fight unless in the damnest circumstances. This kinda crap goes on in South Korea. Another reason why Obama should be president.
