Any guesses? He's likely to announce next Friday - the day after the Dem convention ends. I think Mitt Romney has to be up there. He would really mess up Obama's western strategy. Mormons tend to vote as a block, and there are probably enough in Nevada and Colorado to get those for McCain. Beyond that, there's Pawlenty who seems to be a favorite, but I don't really know why. McCain's not flipping Minnesota (if he does, he probably did well enough to win regardless). I don't know what Pawlenty really brings to the table. There's Portman, and I believe he's popular in Ohio, so that has potential since OH will be so close. Then there's Ridge, who's pro-choice, but very popular in PA. I think that could reach out to some moderates, but who knows. And then there's Lieberman, who would throw an interesting wrench into the mix. The base won't like it, but if McCain can present himself as the bi-partisan candidate, he could win the moderates.
Ridge scares me most of the ones mentioned. PA is an Obama must-win. Thankfully, the radical right seems to be putting the kibosh on him or any other pro-choice candidate. I hope it works. Apart from pro-choice types, he doesn't seem to have a great option. Pawlenty seems like a default pick and he hates Romney (as do a lot of Republicans). And I think I heard Portman wasn't even vetted.
I think Romney is a good choice. Romney is actually smart and will appeal to a wide range of people. Speaking of Tom Ridge...makes me remember how last election there was a terror alert every other week...
serious: Hutchison would be an excellent pick, I think. I've always thought she was more likely than anyone seemed to think. She certainly makes more sense than any other woman that's been mentioned. I'm guessing you were kidding about Gramm.
yaoluv: I certainly hope you're right. As a Democrat, nothing would make me happier than for McCain to pick that smarmy fake.
I was kidding about Gramm, although I would absolutely love it to be him and I think he was probably on the short list a few months ago. As for KBH, I really don't know why she isn't getting more buzz. I think she makes much more sense than Palin. Maybe she and McCain hate each other or something like that. I remember her campainging for the spot about a year ago. I believe the latest buzz about Lieberman.
From what I understand, McCain and Romney really don't click on a personal level. I would be very surprised if it is Romney.
I'm very much in favor of Romney -- he's a business icon who has proven his leadership skills time and time again. He also delivers Nevada, Colorado, and Michigan which would keep Obama out of the White House and send him back to the pews at Trinity Church.
Now, just a minute here. On the one hand, I don't think "he'll eat us" when I see that Obama. On the other hand, why does having money and a cement pond make you any certain thing?
