    Obama hits Davis on 'issues'

    Carrie Budoff Brown reports:

Barack Obama hit John McCain on Wednesday over a comment from his campaign manager that the presidential race will be decided more on personalities than on issues.

“Which probably explains why last night when they were speaking, all these speakers [at the Republican National Convention] came up, you didn’t hear a single word about the economy,” Obama said at an economic forum in New Philadelphia, Ohio. “Not once did people mention the hardships that people are going through.”

“I guess I don’t blame them,” Obama added, “because if you don’t have any issues to run on, you want it all to be about personality. If you have got George Bush’s track record and John McCain voting 90 percent of the time in agreement with George Bush, then you probably you don’t want to talk about issues either.”

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told Washington Post editors Tuesday that issues will have an impact on undecided voters but will not be conclusive.

“This election is not about issues,” Davis said. “This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates.”

The Obama campaign challenged the remarks Tuesday, and Obama added criticism of Davis’ remarks in his stump speech Wednesday, as part of an extended riff aimed at painting McCain as out of touch.

I didn't watch the convention, so I have no idea what the speakers put emphasis on last night. Maybe this is why he picked the inexperienced unknown VP. The economy is so screwed right now, and here we go again with another dumb statement that shows they just don’t understand. I have no idea why this country won't wake up and kick those bums out already.

I agree with Davis, but campaign managers can't say that stuff out loud.

I've lost almost all respect I had for McCain. If he were to hire Rove after what he did to him in 2000 I would really believe he's yet another bad joke.

Rick Davis, campaign manager for John McCain's presidential bid, insisted that the presidential race will be decided more over personalities than issues during an interview with Post editors this morning.

"This election is not about issues," said Davis. "This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

Because Rick Davis knows McCain is getting slaughtered on the issues and POWs any question that comes his way. Rick Davis knows the only chance in hell McCain has is making this election a referendum on Obama.

Presidential elections are always about personalities. Always.

true, but it's a cyncial thing to say - basically saying that you can manipulate people to go for style over substance, and that's what McCain's campaign is doing. Not a smart thing to say. I don't think the electorate is going to like being told that republicans don't have to worry about the issues because they don't think the electorate cares about that as much as they do about personality.

In the second quarter, the economy grew at a rate of 3.3% -- very respectable and the fastest pace in a year. Things aren't nearly as dire as the negative libs seem to think...

That's practically an admission that the Republicans can't win if they make this a campaign about the issues. Hilarious.

    You simply don't understand:
    1) The energy market
    2) Economics
    3) The ability for politicians to impact the economy

You have SO MANY learning curves to climb before you can contribute meaningfully to this thread.

If gasoline prices are at $1.50 again in the next 10 years, I will personally GIVE YOU my luxury SUV. I will give it to you.

He hired Rove's protege as his campaign manager already. Almost immediately, the mud started flying. What more do you want?

2004 all over again. It isn't funny because if it worked before, it could work again.
