Breaking news on MSNBC/CNN: McCain asks that Friday debate be postponed to focus on financial crisis. Wonder what this is about.
No....the debate was supposed to be about foreign policy, a stronger area for McCain. Turn on Fox News or CNN. They're talking about it now.
A desparate political move and an admission that he's weak on the economy. The Republican presidential candidate called on President George W. Bush to convene a meeting of congressional leaders to negotiate a remedy to the financial crisis. LOL - what? Does he not understand separation of powers either?
Link McCain suspends his campaign, and asks to postpone Friday's debate, to address the financial crisis. Both candidates have been marginal players; McCain, though, seems to have the potential to make himself a major one, and his move is a mark, most of all, that he doesn't like the way this campaign is going. But in terms of the timing of this move: The only thing that's changed in the last 48 hours is the public polling. McCain's statement: America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen. Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective. It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration's proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time. Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me. I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem. We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis. I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so. Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.
wow this is just terrible to be postponing this debate. having the debate has nothing to do with the current financial crises. the committees and groups that are working round the clock to help correct the recent problems will continue to do so whether there is a debate or not on friday. I would be furious at those people if they were that negligent to stop whatever they were doing to watch the debate and focus solely on the debate. The debates that will help determine the leader of our great country for the next 4 years seems to be a whole lot important to me on a grander scale of things. It doesnt matter to me if it was McCain or Obama these debates should go on as plan. Trying to delay them as a political move is a slap in the face of all americans.
Even though I'll be at a show on Friday, I was very much looking forward to coming home and watching the debates. Of course our economy is the number one issue right now, but was it really necessary to delay the debates?
political bull****. he's doing this so that if obama says that they should still have the debate, he'll be able to say that obama cares more about politics than fixing the economy. bull**** move by mccain.
I have noticed when looking at the candidates schedules recently that Obama appear to be abel to prep for the debate while still doing a few things but McCain's calendar doesn't have much on it. At any rate, there has to be something more to this.
Really? I don't know squat about economics....I'll readily admit that. But....if we are indeed in the middle of some huge crisis, wouldn't it be prudent for the two candidates to do everything within their power to help resolve the issue? I think this is a political move, but still....it at least sounds like a good idea, no?
