McCain and Follieri: years of "just guys in the neighborhood."

"Anne Hathaway's ex Raffaello Follieri pled guilty yesterday to fraud after he pretended to be a CFO for the Vatican and bilked investors out of money. Today, he began repaying the government as part of his plea bargain and - wait a minute - who's that guy in the purple hat? He looks familiar and possibly dying. Why it's Republican presidential candidate John McCain! Ha ha ha, what in the hell? The Nation explains: The photograph substantiates reports that in late August, 2006, McCain celebrated his 70th birthday aboard a yacht, the Celine Ashley, rented by A-list con man Raffaello Follieri and his then-movie star girlfriend Anne Hathaway.... McCain is shown boarding the yacht ramp towards the smiling Follieri and Hathaway. Just ahead of McCain and shaking hands with Follieri appears to be Rick Davis--McCain's top aide and now co-manager of his campaign, who accompanied him on the trip and advised the government of Montenegro. A few months after McCain's yacht party, Follieri strengthened his ties to McCain's orbit by retaining Rick Davis's well-connected Washington lobbying firm, Davis Manafort, and offering Davis both an investment deal and help in securing the Catholic vote for McCain's presidential bid. Vati-Con Scandal

Vati-Con is the nickname given to a scandal involving Italian real estate developer Raffaello Follieri, who is accused of misappropriating a $50 million investment[1] from billionaire Ronald Burkle meant to buy up Roman Catholic churches in the United States.[2]

On July 15, 2008, Bishop Joseph Anthony Galante of the Diocese of Camden, New Jersey, was implicated in the scandal by a New York Post article titled "A Deal with the Devil" that revealed that Follieri had bought Galante's beach house for $400,000 in 2007 shortly after Galante began the study that resulted in his 2008 announcement to sell off half of the Diocese's church properties.[3][4] Following disclosure of the bishop's involvement in Vati-Con, the Council of Parishes of Southern New Jersey demanded "a complete halt to the Bishop’s planned church closure program."[5]

On July 24, 2008, the New York Daily News reported that in a second raid of Follieri's apartment in New York City, the FBI had confiscated the private journals of Follieri's former girlfriend, actress Anne Hathaway, as part of their ongoing investigation into the scandal. Despite her years-long relationship with Follieri and the seizing of her diaries, Hathaway is currently not facing charges in regard to the scandal.[6]
