Magic Johnson thinking of running for L.A. mayor June 14, 2001 SportsLine.com wire reports LOS ANGELES -- With his old team closing in on yet another basketball championship, Magic Johnson is considering taking up a new game: politics. An ardent campaigner for Jim Hahn in this month's mayoral election, Johnson warned the mayor-elect not to get too comfortable in the job. "I've been asked to run about two or three times," Johnson said in an interview broadcast Wednesday night on KCAL-TV. "But it wasn't my time. I only want to do it when it's my time." Johnson's remarks were broadcast as his old team, the Los Angeles Lakers, was routing the Philadelphia 76ers 100-86 to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 NBA Finals. Johnson helped lead the Lakers to five NBA championships in the 1980s. The mayor-elect, who takes office July 1, is limited to two four-year terms. Johnson said if Hahn is doing a good job four years from now he will bide his time and run in eight years. If not, he might run in four. "If I see candidates that are not for the people -- not going to do the right job for the city, then I'm going to jump in," he said. ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils.
