Basically, Utah, who are in tax territory, gives Eric Maynor to OKC to dump Harpring's salary (which is roughly $6 million, I believe). Well, that sets the market for the Brian Cook salary dump, no?
good move by the thunder. maynor is a decent backup PG and he's only a rookie. why in the world would the jazz give him up just to get out of harprings contract? even if it gets them under the LT... it's not worth a rookie who made the rotation. why not just buy out harpring? oh well good for the jazz since we all hate them haha.
Harpring has no reason to take one cent less than what he's owed. Even if he agrees to a moderate discount, it won't help them much with the tax situation. I believe Boozer returning and matching Portland's offer on Millsap took them well over the luxury tax limit.
wow good news now I can like Eric Maynor again but wth are the j*zz thinking...Hopefully we can trade B.Cook away to the the j*zz
So next on the Jazz' agenda is the dumping of Kyle Korver? The unfortunate thing is that this just took $7.8million OUT of the "LT jackpot pool." Or - to put it another way, it just took $260k away from all team under tax level.
As the kids say, "This sucks eggs!". OKC no longer has the cap space to absorb Cook's contract. They now only have $1.48M of cap space available. As things stand the Nets are the only team in position to take on Cook's contract for a cash profit (cash considerations) in return. The Nets have a $3.7M TE and are $10M+ under the LT threshold Depending on Jaric's buyout the Grizzlies may soon be another option for teams looking to salary dump. The Jazz have become another team (includes Heat and Suns) within range of getting under LT. Another team competing with the Rockets for the Nets TE or possibly Grizzlie's cap space.
Maybe making space for John Wall? I hate how dirty the Jazz plays but all in all Sloan is a good coach and their GM is excellent as well. Take his signings of both Malone and his second coming Boozer the loozer out of the equation, and almost all of his moves are excellent. Getting rid of Maynor probably solves some roster issues next year as well as enables them to dump salary.
Can't plan for that now. The Knicks are playing better lately and the chances of them getting the #1 pick is getting lower.
Don't look now but the Knicks are just 0.5 games out of a playoff spot, no more John Wall fantasies for the Jazz, say hello to Kyle Singler instead, he'll be a great replacement for Ashton Kutcher.
They save 9-10 million in luxury tax by trading Harping's contract which allows them to keep Boozer paying only about 4 million in tax or makes it easier to get under the tax by trading Boozer without having to go through a bunch of loops.
This (although, when combined with Maynor's salary, it may be closer to $15-16M in savings, ALL THIS YEAR, and maybe more, if the Jazz can follow up this move with another move or two to drop under the tax threshold). Maynor is a good, young player. But he ain't worth $16M+ in a down economy.
