Now, I've done my fair share of Bush-bashing. More of a joke then anything...and I can understand why people would want to bash Obama...change of this magnitude does not happen without resistance...but I mean...

To go on a bit of a tangent, I'm a Canadian. What do I care about American politics? Simple. I'm rational, realistic...and Canadian politics are about as boring as well, Canada. Not to mention the whole 51st state thing, which is an exaggeration...but not by much. So in a way, I'm an outsider looking on the inside...I never really signed onto Clutch to talk politics, it just happened after I looked through the section. People have good thoughts here, valuable things to add and I am easily swayed into (sometimes pointless) arguments. But I enjoy them, since people here do put some thought into their posts.

Now going back to the main point, as an outsider looking in, I'm really saddened a bit by all of the ad hominum attacks on the president and the president-elect. Yes, I'll admit that this has touched me a bit more since Obama was elected; I like the guy, what can I say. But Bush too...no matter how incompetent some of us think he may be, he still is the president whether we like it or not and there is some respect due to his office.

All this crap about Obama smoking weed and Bush being a cokehead...it's not leading anywhere. You'll bait people and people will get pissed, but to what end? I'm not expecting this to happen, but it'd be nice if we all realized that the president's office is above and beyond whoever is holding the title and that anyways, respect is due to the man (and maybe in the future, woman) who climbed his way to the top, empowered by the votes of a great American nation...whether or not you like the decisions the man undertakes, you should never stoop down to mockery and mud-slinging of the highest office in the land in your attempts to argue against these changes.

I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you over the sounds of Bush torturing innocent Iraqi children and Obama snorting coke off of a hooker's penis in a limo.

This is where I stopped reading.

We already had this discussion when Obama got elected, and we all agreed Canada is like America with frosty antlers.

Absurd. Say anything you want about Obama.

We're better than that... I fully expect the right to confuse legitimate criticism of Bush with personal attacks on Obama, but that's the reality we live with and to try and manipulate it in some way other than responding with truth and reason would be unAmerican.

(In the heat of the argument, I may also remark that you're a classless tool, a loser, an idiot, an imbecile, a moron and blinded by party allegiance before hammering you with truth and reason, but I won't call you a traitor.)

My guy? lol...in Canada, my guy is Stephen HARP-HARP-HARPER. Btw, we hunted the caribou to extinctionx100, so please stop with the references moe. it's not funny anymore...we still can't figure out who's supposed to run Santa's sleigh

This isn't a truce either. I can understand it if people are attacking the presidents out of humor...but some people are taking it a bit too far. Like, "throwing shoes at the president" far, with serious malicious intent behind it. It's a suggestion and it probably won't be taken, but man...I realize liberals took it far when they piled on Bush and they still do (I still do)...but if you're gonna take that as an excuse to pile on Obama for another four years, at least make it have a point; "Terrorist Obama" and "Obama on weed", I mean really, country first? I'm not even American and I'm starting to feel like the attacks (on both Bush and Obama) are really heading down somewhere nasty, to the point where I'd feel uncomfortable, even as a foreigner or a 51st statesman, whatever you want to consider it...to making jokes at the president's expense.

Don't worry you are more like a territory. If anyone is a 51st state its the UK.

My thoughts exactly. This Canadian is getting a bit uppity if he thinks they are the 51st state. If it wasn't for American, Mexico would have taken Canada a couple centuries ago

The President is an office that is vitally important and needs to be kept safe but the Presidency isn't king and the person who occupies that office is a citizen like the rest of us Americans and a human like the rest of us. He or she deserves the same amount of respect and deference that anyone else deserves. That doesn't mean that the President should be immune from insult and derision. If anything I think when we are deferential to the President on the basis of solely that they are the President we lose something vital to our democracy.

For me personally I think we should continue to mock away at both our current and elect president and future presidents for as long as our democracy survives.

It was good enough for Adams, Jefferson and Hamilton; it's good enough for us.

Funny considering we tried to invade parts of canada before and lost. We managed to defeat Mexico though. Those Canadians are crafty.
