If Houston goes on to win the title this year, it would be the ultimate irony in an otherwise phenomenal career for Charles. Houston should use this season to give Francis, Anderson, and Cato an opportunity to work together...and try to sign Eddie Jones or Brian Grant this summer. Imagine That: Francis, Anderson, Cato, and Jones or Grant for a line-up.
There won't be any cap room for high priced or even medium priced free agents in 2000. I wish that a detailed analysis of the Rockets salary cap situation was required reading before people were allowed to post here. Mango
UB, When we sign those players, make sure to re-sign Charles to play one more year, if he rehabs well after all. Give him the ring!!!
Mango, Knowing the ends and out of the CBA [Contract between Players and Owners] is not necessary. It is nice to see suggested folx to persue. Also . . . Rockets are not hesitant to pull the trigger. If the Free agent is available and we thing it's worth our while. . . . RT and CD find a way to get it done. Rocket River
RR, I am not suggesting that everyone here knows the CBA backward and forward. What I am suggesting that there be a web page/link done with an explanation of where the Rockets stand in relation to the salary cap. Several likely scenarios could be walked through and the salary cap ramifications explained. TDS99 and aelliot used to point out to people that the Rockets would be extremely limited in the future as far as the salary cap. I went to the Patricia Bender site, followed a few lnks and saw that TDS99 and aelliot were right. Since then I have taken it upon myself to carry on the work of aelliot and TDS99 to spread the word about the Rockets and the salary cap. Yes, it makes me the Grinch who stole Christmas, but just the facts and nothing but. Since everyone does not read every post and newcomers abound, I seem to be repeating myself about the Rockets and the salary cap. My Christmas wish is for aelliot, TDS99 and the administrators of this web site to develop a detailed writeup on the Rockets and the salary cap. It would be there for all to see and it should cut back on this wishful speculation about reeling in talented (read: expensive) free agents in 2000. Mango....aka.....Grinch ------------------ It could be worse ....... you could have been born a Jazz fan!!!!
the best and only cba faq you will ever need by larry coon: http://www.members.home.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm coon is the man!
rocket river: you make signing free agents sound way too easy. gm's all over the league struggle and sweat and worry about signing and/or trading for players all year long. it isn't that easy. there are situations where you just CAN'T sign the players you want and/or need. they might not like the area, they might hate the team, they might want more money, or the team they are currently on signs and trades them to another team. if the rockets could get anyone they wanted like that, they could have a lineup of grant hill, tim duncan, eddie jones, glen rice . . . see? it isn't as easy as just pulling the trigger. a lot of thinking and planning go into the signing and trading process. and the salary cap is a MAJOR consideration, not a minor footnote. thats why not just anyone is a gm. if it was that easy, the owners themselves could manage the team. mhan, Thank you for your support on this matter. ------------------------------------------------------------------- RR, When the Lakers were in the process of signing Shaq several years ago, they went through quite a few gyrations so they could sign him. They dumped players and made trades just so they could get everything to work for the salary cap. I don't think they have completely recovered from the roster slashing that they had to do at the time. Chicago is in a mode/mindset to aquire some expensive free agent(s) in 2000. They have done an extensive slash and burn to their roster just so they can be able to sign someone like Duncan. Even after doing that, it is not a sure thing that Duncan or Hill will sign with Chicago. For the Rockets to be able to sign anything above a very low priced free agent in 2000, they would have to tear the roster apart to make room under the salary cap as Chicago and LA have done in the past. Grinch
I find it very hard to believe that if Hakeem came back and decided he didn't want to go through the rebuilding and retired, and now with Barkley gone the Rockets would not have cap room. Hell there is not a high salary left on the team. But Mango should I have researched this, before I was allowed to post??
mhan, I have been to the Coon site in the past. It explained the major things in the CBA to me. I failed to find a listing of player contracts at theCoon site. I used a link from the Bender site to tinker with salary info and see how it added up for the Rockets. Mango
I didn't say it was easy. But Rt and Cd are smart me. . . I have faith in them. As for LA . . .THEY TAMPERED So they don't count. Rocket River
E.J. Tucker Don't worry, I just did the research for you at the Coon site. Here is the link provided to you. http://www.members.home.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#45 It doesn't look like there will be any salary cap relief if Dream retired early. Besides, I can't imagine him giving up the huge checks that he will be getting in 2000-2001. I am one of those people who will call the Houston Chronicle and local TV stations to correct them when they have make obvious errors. That is my nature and I want to correct misinformation when I see it on this BBS. TDS99 and aelliot used to do it and I step up to handle that task if I catch it before they do. Happy Holidays Mango......aka.....Grinch [This message has been edited by Mango (edited December 12, 1999).]
Thanks Mango. we are seeing it differant I think, in the way Hakeem looks at it, and with that only time will tell. You seem to think he will stay for the money regardless of his playing, I think he is too proud to continue when he can not fit in with the team and would rather not be on the bench, or hurting the team. We can agree to disagree, will talk to you later and I will try to do better on the cba.
