Due to the luxury tax it would cost the Mavs $9 million to add him to the roster. The only decision that needs to be made now is ... is Redd worth $9 million? http://dallasbasketball.com/headline_A.asp?pr=
No. Sure, the Mavs need Michael Redd. They only have Tariq Abdul-Wahad and possibly Van Exel and Steve Nash (sometimes) to play the 2...and some guy named...what's his name again? oh yeah, Michael Finley. And who played backup 2 last year also? Johnny Newman, is that his name? I guess the Mavs want to add as many players as they have coaches (20). Too bad you can only have so many players. Maybe the Mavs can have Nowitzki and LaFrentz on IR with, uh, "back spasms" or "ingrown toenails." What Mark Cuban needs is to add some defense. At the 2, he has that with Tariq Abdul-Wahad and his grotesque contract that can't be traded anyway.
Milwakee can match any offer up to mid level and will do so. The mavs won't get Redd even if they are willing to pay the luxury tax.
How is that bitter? Its the truth. The Mavs need to quit adding more and more role players. They have good enough of a team. What they need to do is figure out how to play some defense. Sacramento did, and that is why they whooped up on the Mavs. Believe me, I would rather have the Mavs win then the Lakers, Spurs or Sacramento. Mark Cuban is not that bad, but the dude needs to leave the team alone. Assuming this is Cuban's plan.
If they sign Redd, and if Milwaukee does not match, then Finley may become trade fodder. Is there a 4 or 5 at Finley's salary (isn't he Base Year???) who might be in Cuban's sights?
Redd would be a nice addition to the Mavs but they don't need him. They have enough shooters as it is, plus I don't know where Redd would see the PT.
Before you start talking out of your butt, why don't you look at the rosters first. The Houston Rockets probably have more guys on the roster than the Dallas Mavericks yet somehow you criticize the Mavericks. As for the backup last year Johnny Newman, if you bothered to do a little research before you started typing this nonsense you would have known that Newman is not with the team this year. You would also know that Griffin and Abdul-Wahad are both coming off surgeries that could have lingering effects which might lead to missed games, seeing that both of them have a record of injuries. If both of them are hurt then the Mavericks have no real backup sg. Then you mention how the Mavericks need to add some defense yet you forget that Michael Redd is a strong defensive guard. If you want to keep trying to be the GM for the Mavericks then why don't you suggest someone that is available to the Mavericks that would come in and automatically make the Mavericks a much better team. Oh wait you can't.
Is it necessary to direct that at someone like that? Here, newbie, opinions are accepted and listened to. Don't come in here and do that. He, Roxtxia, has an opinion and of most of the people here at Clutch City have earned the right to talk. Accept an opinion and states yours- don't degrade anyone while doing that.
No offense, but drop the newbie crap. I think dirtyfilthy responded appropriately. Roxtia's post was scornful of the Mavs, which is fine, of course. But if (s)he gets his post torn up as a result, so what? Just because dirtyfilty's a Mavs fan doesn't mean (s)he can't have an opinion. It's not like (s)he's dissing the Rockets for no reason.
Let's see just how many guys they have on the roster ... Finley, Nash, Dirk, Raef, NVE, Griffen, TAW, Najera, Popeye, Bradley, Eschmeyer, Avery Johnson, and Raja. If you include Wang then that's 14 guys going into camp however Wang will more than likely be traded so that makes only 13 guys. Avery Johnson will also more than likely be cut. As for learning defense I agree, and appearently so does Nellie. According to Nellie this camp will not focus on players earning roster spots since the team is pretty much already set. They don't really need to work on offense since they lead the league in scoring. This entire camp will focus on defense (according to Nellie). He has challenged every player to give their all and says that the defense that was played last year will not be tolerated from anyone (including Dirk, Fin, and Nash).
I always thought that Micheal Redd and Scooney Penn had some serious game, in Ohio State they had absolutely brilliant flashes. I wonder what happened to Scooney though? Personally I would not mind seeing the Rockets make a move for Redd only to add talent and keeping everyone that we already have as well minus a few notables like Collier.
I still haven't heard of a good reason for Dal NOT to sign Redd. Luxury tax? Since when was that an issue with Cuban? If he really cared about it, he wouldn't have traded Howard for NVE and LaFrentz. What this move does (I doubt it happens since Mil most likely would match any offer), is that it would allow Dal some roster flexibility as far as trading a Finley. People need to realize that there are not many permanent rosters in the NBA. Just because a team signs someone, doesn't mean they are finished with the roster. I just question the timing. I guess they wanted to make sure they could get Rashard first. With training camp coming soon, I don't know why Redd isn't signed by Mil or someone else yet. IMO, Finley isn't all that much better than Redd, though Finley is the Mavs most clutch player. If Dallas could package Finley + draft picks and other junk for a legitimate big man, they could be the best in the NBA. However, I don't know what big man they can possibly get.
