This guy has no business playing, much less starting for an NFL team. His awful tackling damn near cost the Texans the game. First he dives at Chris Chambers like a damn fool, and watches him go 57 yds for the score. Then later on, he fails to wrap up Ricky and instead goes for a sh*tty arm tackle. The Texans had better start looking for a new free safety, because this guy is horrible, and is a tackling disaster waiting to happen. Matt Stevens should be cut this week, while the Texans search for a replacement.
What a joke this guy is. I find it hard to believe that the Texans can't find a better replacement for him. Hell I think that Stephen Hawking could cover more ground and tackle better than Stevens can.
This is from the Miami Herald: After falling behind 15-14 late in the third quarter, Miami drove 80 yards to regain the lead. The Dolphins faked a reverse and Fiedler threw to Williams, who wove through the defense and lost his left shoe running out of the grasp of the last potential tackler, safety Matt Stevens. When Williams scored, Stevens then kicked the shoe 20 yards in frustration. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/6716380.htm Perhaps Matt is just a frustrated Kicker
You wanna talk about pansies and arm tackling...you shoulda watched our game yesterday. We're facing the best rb prospect in Western Ny, and our defense wants to arm tackle. The kid, who's committed to Syracuse, would just spin when someone just grabbed his jersey...he ended up with 281 yards on 16 carries. 51-0.
I hope the Texans see aren't commited to starting Stevens at free safety. He needs to learn that when he's the last guy that has a chance at making the tackle he doesn't need to give a knockout shot every time down. He needs to give an extra yard or two and wrap the ball carrier up. There are highschoolers who tackle better than this guy.
I've visited 3 or 4 texas sports related BBS today and each one of them has a whole thread started this afternoon dedicated too Matt Stevens and his suckiness.
I suggest that Matt Stevens may of saved the game by his ****ty attempt of tackling he displayed Sunday when instead of stopping Ricky Williams, he came up with his shoe. ya see, with Stevens' crafty move smartly removing Ricky's shoe, Ricky was unable to be on the field for the 2 point conversion! The Dolphins failed attempt allowed the Texans to only need 6 points to win.
THat is funny....the fact they also went for the 2pt conversion and failed, gave us the victory by 1.
"Bring me in, and just let my play speak for itself," Stevens said. "As long as they don't bring in someone else who is making a lot more money than me, I feel like I will beat them out with my talent and my ability. I don't second-guess my ability."
The problem is, he's the brains of the operation...in a 3-4, that's really what the free safety does. Having said that...I'd LOVE to see an upgrade. But I'm glad that our glaring weakness is our FS...it could be a lot worse...it could be our OL.
i think we will...my guess is we'll draft a corner first to be there to replace coleman eventually. very rarely are safeties drafted in the first couple of rounds...ed reed (the guy from miami...not sure if i get his name right or not) and roy williams come to mind recently.
I almost felt sorry for him. The annoucers were ripping into him. I never see annoucers so critical of a none super star like Stephens.
