The Power of 12 Arthur Yoria and Matt Maloney launch a new local label As Pantera would put it, both Arthur Yoria and Matt Maloney are far beyond driven. Maloney parlayed his relatively small size and average talent into a basketball career that took him from the Ivy League to six years in the NBA. Yoria is one of Houston's most perfectionist musicians, and while he hasn't yet made it to the music equivalent of NBA ball, he appears to have the talent, savvy and drive to do so. Now with the launch of 12 Records (12 was Maloney's Rockets jersey number), these two overachievers are teaming up. Maloney and Yoria met through a mutual friend. "It was shortly after I moved back from Atlanta a couple of years ago," remembers Maloney. "I think we were going to meet Arthur for a drink and my friend put the CD in the car stereo and I said, 'Wow, that's impressive.' " "We talked about it for more than a few months before we did it," adds Yoria. "It was an idea floating around. At first I was still talking to labels and doing showcases and stuff, but it didn't pan out." Maloney, who's a big fan of Britpop, dabbles in music himself, and he and Yoria are collaborating on the creative end as well as the financial. They have yet to record any of this material -- for now, the focus is on getting Yoria's name out there. (The two have no plans to sign any other artists.) The campaign starts May 17 at the Engine Room, where Yoria will release his first full-length CD, I'll Be Here Awake. click link above for complete article
...and if it fails, he doesn't need to worry because he'll still be getting checks from the Rockets for the next 25 years or so...
at least he is doing something productive and creative w/ all that rocket money. a lesser man would be blowing it on booze and whores. i didnt know matty was a musician. i wonder what he sounds like. he likes brit-pop, so probably oasis. i actually have seen him at shows around town over the last couple years. the biggest suprise was seeing him at numbers for spiritualized last april. they are a drugged out, british psychedelic band a'la pink floyd. definately dont sound like oasis. he was digging the music though, as was his hot blonde lady-friend.
Went to high school with the same hot blonde lady friend and she is very friendly. Also, my sister actually heard some of MM's music and said it was somewhat Depeche Mode-ish. My favorite part of the article is the part about Adrian Houston. I read the post that they were referring to and thought it was a dead-on satire of the indie rock scene in Houston.
Maloney sucked w/ the Rockets and now he's trying his hand out in music. Usually it's the other way around where the rappers or anyone w/ a music label is trying out for the NBA. And they fail. Is it going to be the same way for Maloney? Tune in after 6 months and find out!
Saw him at Zimm's about 2 months ago on a Tuesday night. Seemed pretty cool..... was getting liquored up.... and of course had a hottie in hand..... this one was a brunette.
Is this a joke. Their starting a record label name "12 records" Did i read it correctly? I must be on drugs, let me read it again.
More power to you, Baloney. I'd do the same thing if I won the lottery or had 1 decent year for the Rockets (same thing). Maybe now Houston can have a record label that signs acts that aren't hip-hop or blues. What a concept!
His first move will be to re-release Hakeem's early work Akeem the Dream and to buy the rights to the Air Bullard song.
Chance, I expect you to be getting a call real soon.... You could probably clinch it with a song called "Boney Maloney".
