http://www.nypost.com/sports/39388.htm BOBBY TRIES HOOP GIG FOR YES By ANDREW MARCHAND ------------------------------------------------------------------------ January 28, 2005 -- Former Duke star Bobby Hurley will give sportscasting a try. The Jersey City native will be unveiled as a YES analyst teamed with John Sterling on the Penn-Yale women's game Friday night. Hurley, now 33, plans on doing a six-game YES Ivy League schedule - the other five will be men's games - before deciding if he wants to pursue more. "I watch games and I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of basketball," Hurley said over the phone this week. "Hopefully, I can communicate that well to people.'' Since finishing his NBA career in 1998, Hurley has done some high-school coaching and some NBA scouting, but has mainly been involved in the purchase and breeding of horses. In 2001, Hurley's horse, Song And A Prayer, ran in the Kentucky Derby. Hurley, who analyzed one Duke game for Fox Sports two years ago, doesn't expect he will have a Dick Vitale-like schtick. "I don't know if I'm going to be that type," Hurley said. "I'm going to try initially to stick with what I know, which is basketball.'' It was 12 years ago that Hurley - the seventh pick in the 1993 NBA Draft - survived a near-fatal car accident. Hurley said his day-to-day health is good, but his knees prevent him from playing too much pickup. "The next day I am reminded why I don't do it that often," Hurley said. ESPN has formulated its NBA list for Dream Job III. To create more buzz for the show, ESPN has switched from searching for the next Dan Patrick to looking for another Greg Anthony. Ex-Knick Gerald Wilkens, along with J.R. Reid, Matt Bullard, Dee Brown, Darryl Dawkins and Dana Barros will try to avoid being verbally embarrassed by judges Stephen A. Smith, Woody Paige and ESPN chief talent scout Al Jaffe. "I'm sure [the ex-players] are nervous about it, as you or I would be," said Mike Antinoro, ESPN's executive producer for original entertainment. The six-week show debuts Sunday, Feb. 20 at 10 p.m. If this show does well, football and baseball could be next. If you noticed, Fox' Super Bowl pregame is listing Tom Arnold's contribution as the Best Darn Super Bowl Roadshow Period, not "damn." Fox Sports chairman David Hill said the decision wasn't made to appease the FCC, but it was done to avoid complaints for some of its affiliates. Antinoro said that ESPN's next drama could be based on boxing. Don't look for any Don King portrayals. King is suing Disney and ESPN for $2.5 billion - with a "B" - claiming the network's SportsCentury feature defamed him. Jim Rome is Burning got lost as a once-a-week program. ESPN will soon make it a daily show at 4:30 p.m.
Bull always sounds very intelligent on basketball, and he's been an analyst already... I don't know about the other guys, but if Bull doesn't either win or make it pretty far, it's likely because he just isn't "entertaining" enough, especially with Stephen A. Smith as a judge.
Is Dream Job like American Idol, where viewers can help to vote for the winners? Do you guys remember the matt bullard fan club. If those guys are still around, I don't think ESPN realizes what they are up against. Bull could be like that John Peter Lewis guy that made it way too far on Idol. Only clearly more attractive.
And we certainly wouldnt want quality FACTUAL reporting to get in the way of "entertaining" people! SAS is a joke as a judge. Greg Anthony is a perfect example of a guy that is very opinionated but doesnt have to have a "schtik" or scream to get his points across. Anthony, like Legler, are very good. They clearly present the material well, speak clearly have provide good facts. They are easy to listen to. Bullard's style would be similar to theirs. The opposite would be the first year ESPN had the NBA and Tim Hardaway was on there. He was the WORST analyst of ALL TIME! How did he get throw the screaning process? SAS is coherent at least, but the screaming has got to go. He looks like a "muppet" up there.
Dee Brown pays off refs. There is no doubt in my mind. It would not suprise me that he will pay off judges as well.
I see no reason why Bullard would be any worse then Legler. In fact, he can be as factual as Legeler and more entertaining, if he can manage to come across as the likeable dork that he really is.
this will be the greatest thing that has happened since airbullard.com went down. he was the Man of the Year award winner at his banquet that his fan club set up for him and then proceeded to whoop EVERYONE in pop-a-shot. not only one of the classiest men to ever don a rockets uni but he also frequently disses pippen on sportsradio. he deserved to be murph's replacement (van chan is doing okay), but now it's time for Bull to go national baby. no one deserves it more. damn stephen smith better not ruin it for us... GO BULL!
Funny story .... I was walking back to my downtown office several years ago, my stomach full of Zero's Meatball sandwich and Zapp's Spicy cajun crawtator flavored potato chips, when at the corner of Travis and Bell I see an elderly woman being harrassed by a bunch of teenage no- goodniks. I start to race towards the woman's aid, when a silver z28 comes racing down the block and screeches to a halt just feet away from the fracas. A tall and muscular but lean man with a handsome smile and stylish goatee jumps out of the car and starts throwing basketballs with pinpoint accuracy at the 3 hoodlums. Common sense and the fear of God soon takes over, and the thugs flee on foot. In disbelief, I turn around to see if anyone else had witnessed what I just saw. When I turn back, all I see is a happy old lady, and a silver z28 racing away. Bachman Turner Overdrive blaring in the afternoon wind. License plate read BULL50 This guy deserves to win. Thanks Matt....for everything
I have no idea if this is a true story or not, but nonetheless you should have embellished it with a Zorry-esque "B" being etched into a brick wall or something.
