We have seen the glimpses but here’s what needs to happen: 1) Sign team-friendly deal multi-year deal. I believe this is possible with what is remaining in the MLE. Once he’s under contract for multiple years, the organization will be incentivized to have him do well. 2) Trade out Oladipo. Jones needs a path to playing time and Oladipo is more likely to be traded this season than Gordon. Would you trade VO, Ben and Kurucs for Kleiber (can pop and roll), Brunson (backup PG needed) and Finney-Smith (3&d forward)? These guys are all under contract and fit team needs (considering tucker is on the block too). The Knicks have interest in VO and Dallas is struggling and the Knicks has their pick. If you can pit the two teams against each other, you could get a good return. 3) Profit. I know he’s modeled his game after Harden but right now he looks like a mini Joe Johnson. Either outcome would be great as a best case scenario. Either we are overhyping our guy or we are ahead of the curve with him. You can scoop up his autographed rookie cards for cheap right now and if he does turn into a star that is cash money. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mason-Jone...576729?hash=item23eed1b759:g:vp8AAOSw~iVgKDlz https://www.ebay.com/itm/2020-21-Pa...729357?hash=item4dbc3f088d:g:yXwAAOSw6bZgEa5L https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mason-Jone...929112?hash=item23eea95118:g:V7YAAOSwFalgJYTw 4) Sit back and enjoy. He’s got that self-made Jimmy Butler grinder type story where you know he’s going to keep working on his craft. Hopefully we see step one happen in the next few weeks because I think that is just as important as staying with the Rockets aligns with his play style.
Throwing in Exum and James Johnson would work according to the Trade Machine. And it saves broke boy some money.
True. Eric Gordon has value now. If he’s traded, there’s more than enough time for all the young guys.
I’m not as high on Mason as many of you. He doesn’t seem to have any athleticism. Best case scenario is andre miller-type player. Which ain’t bad, but I don’t see anything special about him. Admittedly I’ve seen ZERO college footage only his time with us.
Um the guy is not very good. I don’t think he’s bad I think he’s just a slightly below avg nba player hype train is going crazy
I have seen glimpses of greatness in little time i saw him play... btw rondo helped lakers beat the rockets and he looks like just a slightly below average player mayority of the time if he were drafted no 1 pick by a clueless franchise like a hornets and given a lot of playing time and keys to the team no doubt he might produce 20+ points a game on good efficiency
Thank you. Man the hype train gets rolling with any glimmer of talent. This is a fringe rotation guy.
i mean his first game he started up put 23 right? i like his game the only thing that limits him IMO is playtime right now. he's going to make some bad TO's and shots but he needs that learning curve. i think his floor is fringe rotation player and upside being a Lou Will Type of 6man.
this guy is a worker a la Jimmy butler. Mason Jones was 270 lbs and slimmed down, played in junior college then Arkansas. He was learning in year 1 and took off in year 2. Wouldn’t surprise me if the same happened here. I think we can all acknowledge that he can shoot at a high level already. I think he will learn how to deal with nba level athletes and improve on his own athleticism over time. you combine skill with hard work you will find success.
I can't acknowledge anything he has not played enough, there are plenty of hard workers who never made it in the NBA so I have no idea what that is supposed to prove. Butler was always a good athlete something Jones is not.
while his %s now are good with a small sample size. His large sample of ft shooting (80+%) in college is correlated to expected shooting prowess by the analytics. At some point his small sample size will become bigger and stand on its own until then.
and Jones is already a better shooter and shot creator than Jimmy ever will be. The comparison is for work ethic, not player attributes.
and some luck involved is needed... a lot of it... a lot of talented hard working athletic types didnt make it nba... opportunity isnt a lenghty visitor
Rondo was great the first time he stepped on the floor with the Boston big 3 and is one of the reasons they won a championship his rookie year so I don’t see the comparison??
lol butler is gigantic and ripped a physical specimen and one of the best defenders in the nba, if he shot 20% from the free throw line he would still be on an nba team so comparing MJ to him literally makes zero sense
Not comparing physical attributes. Coming grinder mindset and upward mobility. Both guys played JUCO and then a D1 program and worked hard on their craft. You can see from MJs tweets that he’s not satisfied with just making it to the NBA. He wants to be great. So he’s got the will and skill. He does need health and opportunity. In a couple of weeks the opportunity will be there.
