Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ Movie Taps Jake Schreier As Director
    June 9, 2022 1:30pm

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios’ top-secret Thunderbolts movie looks to have gained momentum as Deadline has learned that Jake Schreier is set as director of the new Marvel tentpole. Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson is penning the script with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige producing.

Not much is known about the plot of film other than it revolved around a group of supervillains (or at least characters who have played bad guys at one point in MCU) who go on missions for the government. Another element that remains vague is which character will be part of this team since the film it technically still is in development, though sources say Marvel has been in touch with certain individuals who already are part of the MCU to make sure to keep an opening in their schedules for next summer when it shoots.

That said, some of the characters that potentially could be starring or making some sort of appearance include Baron Zemo, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster, The Abomination, US Agent and the Winter Soldier.

General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross is also a possibility since he is the person in the comics who assembles the first team — hence the name — but that is unconfirmed as no deal for any actor has closed.

While the town has been buzzing about The Fantastic Four directing searchquietly , which has only begun meeting potential candidates, the studio has been focused on Thunderbolts ODA, and according to insiders, Schreier presentation in recent weeks blew away execs and ultimately landing him the job.

Schreier, who cut his teeth directing classic Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar music videos, broke onto the scene with his 2013 Sundance darling Robot & Frank. He also directed 2015’s Paper Towns, recently wrapped production on the A24 and Netflix series Beef and has directed episodes of FX’s Dave. He is repped by CAA and Grandview.

Xerobull note: This is not the Marvel version of The Suicide Squad

I don't understand how they get people to care about this movie with a bunch of side characters.

There's gotta be some main character they'll add to this that isn't normally in the Thunderbolts. Maybe Hulk?

Same could be said for Guardians of the Galaxy, but I don't think the writer of Black Widow is giving me much hope.

can’t get excited about this, unless maybe tom cruise is in it

I'd be happy with 5-7 years of X-men trilogies ASAP with a Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer movie sprinkled in between, but that's just me...

Everything is now a content pipeline centered around D+

Guardians were their own new unique team. This is a team made up of sidekicks and villains of said sidekicks.

An accurate comparison would be a Drax feature film.

    Really hard to keep caring....

The new Suicide Squad and Peacemaker worked because it was crude, violent, and funny. Is Marvel going that route with this? May need a catchy opening. The current GOAT:

Cast listing not woke enough yet to rev up expectations with the eventual bait and switch gaslight

Baron Zemo and US Agent are the only ones that seem interesting to develop. Can’t say I care too much about any of the others.

Nobody card about or could've named a single character from Guardians of the Galaxy before the movie came out.

I'm not saying Thunderbolts is going to do well because it is a bunch of B listers.

It's worth giving a shot, just find the news drought on characters people actually care about a bit suspect.

For whatever it’s worth, the original Thunderbolts comic run was excellent. Source material is there.

The thing is, comic book b-listers are MCU superstars, and some of the most important, powerful people in the comics aren't even recognizable names for movie fans.

If you asked a bunch of MCU fans to identify Bucky Brooks and Reed Richards, the average movie fans would identify Bucky as the big deal, and would say, "Reed who?"

It could work and be very successful but you're going to need someone like a Gunn or Waititi to helm a project like this. The reason why GotG worked was mostly due to Gunn. Waititi basically brought the Thor franchise back from the dead and made Hemsworth/Thor a likable character. And I don't mean actually giving this movie to Gunn or Waititi but find a new/fresh director that can put his/her own creative spin on this.
