I recently signed up for one of the online subscriptions. 4.99/month for unlimited viewing of most of their library is pretty sweet. anyway, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some very good marvel comic series to read?

I recently finished house of m and x:men dark genesis. I also heard astonishing x-men (with josh whedon as the writer) was very good. I started on a recent series of captain america as well. world war hulk was awesome, I want to go back and read planet hulk (I watched the animated movie).

    thanks in advance!

I actually bought the first couple comics in that series when it originally came out! I need to read it.
All suggestions are welcome, I have nothing against classics. I would *prefer* newer stuff, but I'll definitely read that as well.

    X-Men 2099 was pretty good
    Infinity Gaulet

The issue with the subscription is that is not always complete series.
They seem to be gaps and holes.

I could be wrong but in a lot of cases I've seen where it's the whole series. There's a lot of cases where they don't as well. It's still a LOT of comics for $5.
Typically you'll pay almost that much for one issue.

I think it really depends on what you're trying to get into. Being a big Hulk fan, I would tell you to read Planet Hulk (it's leap years ahead of it's time and better than World War Hulk).

    1) And you like espionage: Try Ed Brubaker's Run on Captain America - issues 1-50

    2) Epic storylines involving the entire marvel universe: Civil War, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign, Siege (in this order)

    3) Intergalactic wars, check out: Annihilation, Conquest, War of Kings, and Realm of Kings.

    4) X-men trilogy on the Mutant messiah: Messiah Complex, Messiah War, and X-Men: Second Coming.

    5) Spider-man has been real good as of late with the Gauntlet series (reinventing classic Spidey villians). I've had difficulty getting over the mess they did with One More Day (in which Spidey basically makes a deal with the devil to save Aunt May's life in exchange for his marriage with Mary Jane -- which is now removed from the entire history Spidey's background).

I also wouldn't limit myself to Marvel since there are some amazing things happening with DC and Image (to name a few). The stuff that Geoff John's did with the Green Lantern mythos has been legendary.

Also if you're into Zombies, check out Image's "The Walking Dead" (soon to be made into an AMC live-action series) which is epic (writer Robert Kirkman tells it just like George Romero would).

If you're into any specific character, let me know, I pretty much know which good storylines are out there for them.

Just started Whedon's X-Men myself, two trades in. Pretty good.

A lot of the Thunderbolts is entertaining, particularly Ellis' run.

You might want to consider a strategy and read through stuff in a logical order rather than just picking at stories. The Astonishing X-Men is actually a good option, it kind of exists in its own world. I guess all I can really recommend is the early Claremont X-Men stuff. All of his stuff was good.

I just got a bunch of backing boards and mylar bags for my comics from the 70's-90's so I could re-bag 'em. It piqued my interest enough to go out and buy a bunch of old comics with Thanos, Galactus (my fave), and Celestials appearances. I need to go back and buy some old comics I couldn't afford as a kid. I told my mom to buy Action Comics #1 when it was only around $15-$20,000, I think. She thought I was nuts. One of them recently auctioned for $1 million.

Infiinity Gauntlet was one of the series I did get, btw.

Age of Apocalypse storyline in the X-titles.

    Best ever IMO.

All of the Xmen storylines are good though. Xtinction agenda, Days of Future Past, Mutant Massacre, etc.

Age of Apocalypse is also good because it stands on its own. A true beginning - middle - and end.

Age of Apocalypse was awesome as was the miniseries that came out after it that dove into the origin of Apocalypse.

The Onslaught saga was also very good in parts.

I was a big fan of Forge's storyline in X-Factor where he fights the enemy and has to resort to magic.

    Infinity Gauntlet storyline was cool.

Beta Ray Bill stories were always awesome.

The Mutant Massacre is an awesome storyline that shaped so much of the comics for years. Great read.

Obviously the Phoenix and Dark Phoenix stuff is worth reading.

I would definitely DEFINITELY read the Age of Apocalypse though. That was by far and away the most awesome comic line ever. The new Earth issues of the heroes after the Onslaught crisis are pretty interesting too.

Thank you! I'm not sticking with just Marvel, I recently read "Wanted". Completely different from the movie, but very awesome. Makes me wish the movie was more like the comic frankly (and I liked the movie). I just started reading the Watchmen.

I have a backlog actually, I am going to read V for Vendetta as well. Kick ass is next, the movie was fantastic. Honestly, I was never much of a DC fanatic. I've always been into Marvel.

Deadpool, Iceman, Hulk, Captain America, X-men in general. Typically I like the big over-arching stories that involve a lot of the character universe. I guess I just kind of like epic battles or where there is some huge twist in story canon.
