AJ Smith and marty are not even on speaking terms. Sort of odd though, I guess after losing both Coordinators, the Chargers felt like it was an opportunity to start fresh. Also, Marty turned down an extension. Why didn't they just fire him earlier and hire Cameron?
If true, this is a good move by the Chargers. Marty lost both coordinators and has a hostile GM. I think it was likely he would fail anyway. Now the Chargers can go ahead and move forward right now instead of wasting next season. It doesn't seem fair to Marty but that's coaching for you.
Very very very very very good question. For them to wait this long is inexcusable, unless Marty demanded something recently that forced their hand. They lost out on the first crop of candidates (including Cameron) and will have to settle for leftovers. I still think of Cam Cameron as the QB for IU. He's done well for himself.
Good move. But, they should have done it earlier, that way they could have possibly kept one of their coordinators to stay on as head coach.
So who is the favorite there? Unless something major happened, there was no reason to wait this long.
I think it's foolish that two grown men who are supposed to be working together cannot get along. Be adults and get over it.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2763552 Sources close to Marty Schottenheimer and the San Diego Chargers said the coach was fired by the team Monday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported. Schottenheimer and Chargers general manager A.J. Smith have been having disagreements over staffing after losing a number of assistants. Dean Spanos, the team president, told Schottenheimer on Monday that it wasn't going to work between him and Smith. Three days after the Chargers melted down in a stunning 24-21 playoff loss to New England, Spanos decided that bringing Schottenheimer back for the final year of his contract gave San Diego its best chance to win. Schottenheimer, though, declined the team's offer of a one-year extension for 2008 worth $4.5 million, with a $1 million buyout. "Right now, I wasn't comfortable accepting it," Schottenheimer told the Associated Press shortly after the season. He would have earned more than $3 million in 2007. With a regular-season record of 200-126-1 with Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego, Schottenheimer is the most successful coach never to have reached the Super Bowl.
If he didnt have Smith to worry about, this would be the best situation Pete Carrol could ever hope for.
Why don't the texans hire him, he is a proven winner. All kubiak has done is proving he is an idioting for passing on VY and bush.
Thank God ... I've been to every Charger home game the last 4 years and they have not won ONCE because of Marty, only in spite of him. It was not until Marty gave up offensive and defensive control of this team to his coordinators that the players started to flourish. They only lost games because of his TERRIBLE game management which was exemplified in the Playoff game this year. If it were not for dumb mistakes by the players, they still would have won DESPITE his poor game management so I think this team is better off in the long run by getting rid of him. Waiting this long to do it was the real mistake. Who is going to take over now? This team is loaded and they should get the best shot at the best coaches. I've heard many want them to go after Jimmy Johnson, but since I can't stand him, I truly hope they don't. Maybe Cowher would be ready to come out of retirement? I doubt it.
After one season ... give me a break. Going 6-10 in the tough AFC is nothing to be ashamed of. The Texans improved a lot this year. The last thing they need is Marty to set them back.
