They just need to get Millen out of the front office and into a WWE gig and they will have 1/2 a chance.
Seriously, I called Matt Jackson on 610 last Thursday, because he was saying that the Lions shouldn't have to interview a minority candidate because they knew who they want to hire and it would be a waste of everyone's time. I agree with that, but my point was that the Lions hired an incompentent coach, Mornhinweg, through the good ole boy system so they should be the one team that is forced to comply to these rules.
Apparently some interviews were set up to comply with the league's rule, but the candidates (not named in the Detroit newspaper), declined to interview because they knew it was just for show.
I think the rules do help. For example, the Lions may have really like Mariucci, but if a black head coach is allowed to walk in the door he may just knock the socks off the owner. So it give an opportunity that woudn't otherwise exist. In many cases it may seem like a joke. But it can work. And at the very least owners talk. So if he has a good interview the word spreads fast. So I think it does work.
Well in the Lions case, because it was so publically known that the Mooch was their man from the start, I think it would deter other canidates from pursuing the job.
