Toys for the boys as Marks and Spencer unveils in-store daycare for men

Wed Dec 8, 1:37 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - Women fed up with their menfolk moaning while out Christmas shopping can now leave them to play in their own in-store creche.

Marks and Spencer, the venerable British department store chain, said Wednesday it was creating playpens for men in six of its stores, fully equipped with everything to keep the guys entertained for hours.

The lads will be able to settle back in sofas and watch a selection of films and TV programmes such as "The Best of Monty Python" and "Football's Greatest Ever Matches".

Each area will also boast a Scalextric slot-car racing set, remote-control quad bikes and walkie-talkies.

The creches open Thursday at Marks and Spencers' flagship store at Marble Arch in London, and at selected outlets in Edinburgh and Aberdeen in Scotland, Cardiff in Wales, and Sheffield in north-central England.

They must not have The Sharper Image over there. I would consider that a good place to hang out and kill some time.

    cool.

a few weeks ago while I waited 1hr30min for Best Buy to install my speakers and such into my truck, I went straight to the home theater section and sat down in one of the messaging leather seats infront of a huge tv and watched Direct Tv.....they didn't notice when I changed the channels. But did notice that some guy was sitting in the seats for about 90min. The same employees walked by me like 50times.

Just proof that little boys never really grow up? (as women are fond of saying)

No, really, why is this just for men? In other words, they get to have fun while we have to do the shopping and run the errands. Wait a minute. I don't think so.

Of course, they could always create an in-store lounge for ladies, especially in hardware and auto parts stores, which do not endlessly fascinate most of us. The problem is that they would probably fill it with furniture that looked cute but wasn't comfortable, and the main activity would probably be doing your hair and makeup. :p

This has become something that a number of retailers are doing. I read about this last Christmas at another store (can't remember which one), but it was a little more subdued - just a bunch of comfortable chairs, refreshments and TV's with sports. :)
