just became a free agent !!!!! I think we go get this guy and let him work with Roger and Nolan !!! if he can get back to half the pitcher he was a couple of years ago it could really improve our rotation !
I completely agree. I just wrote an email to Alyson Footer (MLB writer for the 'Stros) asking this same question. I think he's worth a shot, because he probably can be had on the cheap. Then again, with the pitching pool so small this year, I'm sure some other teams may have the same idea, which may bloat the asking price.
I don't know. Considering that the Cubs drafted him and developed him...if there was ANY chance the guy had anything left in the tank they would have kept him, I imagine. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to offer a small, one year contract and see what we can do with him. But I wouldn't be expecting much.
A small, one year deal won't get it done, every team in baseball, sans the Cubs, would offer that to Prior. Someone will throw quite a bit of cash, and likely a multi-year deal at him.
I dunno, considering his injury history; I know a lot of teams are in need of pitching, but I dunno if they'd take a big gamble on a guy with injury problems who lost his control when he tried to comeback last year and got relegated back to the minors. I'd imagine teams would throw a 2 year deal to him max with heavy incentives and possibly a club option on that 2nd year. If anybody offers more than that then they're idiots...I'd expect the same from Jason Jennings. And I dunno why the club doesn't even think about offering Jennings a contract...his injury at worse put him at the same level as Woody (and he's still on the team)...but fully recovered, he may not be an ideal two but he could be closer to that spot than any of the other guys we have...and fans are pretty forgiving when you start winning...if he does throw well last season would be a distant memory.
Some team with deeper pockets will have more money to offer him then the Astros. Given the Astros financial situation they can't afford to take the risk on a guy like Prior.
People used to bend over backwards to talk about Prior's fantastic mechanics. Now they're horrible? I've rather give Prior a 2 year deal than someone like Randy Wolf or some of these other guys people have been talking about.
Really?? Seriously, really? Perhaps my memory has betrayed me (again), but afaicr Wood and Prior were the poster children for bad mechanics leading to short careers. We had one of those here in Houston, too: see Miller, Wade.
I think it's pretty much universally agreed upon that there was another common factor that more directly resulted in Prior & Wood's injuries: All reports I've read have indicated that Prior will almost certainly end up on the west coast, probably in San Diego.
As Hammer755 said, he'll probably end up west. It can't hurt to try, though. Maybe a 1-yr incentive laden deal with a team option for the 2nd?
Dusty Baker is known to mess up arms by leaving guys in there for 130-140 pitches all the time. He also messed up Livian Hernandez when he was with SF. There are a few other Pitchers that I can't think of right now...
Prior, Wood, Pettite, Nomar, and several others linked to the list are extremely likely to have used steroids/HGH to rehab injuries. Not likely that they got injury-prone from using. Evan
My wife is a cubs fan, so ultimately have to watch a lot of cubs games on top of the Astros... Bottomline, Prior is always hurt. I mean always. That said, I'd still pick him up for cheap in the hopes that he'd stay alive for two to three games.
