    Cuban complains about Pistons, Spurs

Mavericks owner says the most aggressive teams in the league are also the least penalized.

Chris McCosky / The Detroit News

    January 8, 2006

AUBURN HILLS -- You hear that noise, kind of shrilly and annoying, coming from the South?

It's another fine whine coming from deep in the heart of Texas.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban thinks the league's officials might be giving the Pistons and Spurs too much leeway during games, perhaps in deference to their reputations as tough, defensive teams.

"What I don't understand is how the two most aggressive defensive teams in the league are Detroit and San Antonio," Cuban told the Dallas Morning News, "yet they've had the fewest fouls called against them. How does that happen? I don't understand it."

The Pistons are being whistled for an average of 19.57 fouls a game, the lowest in the league. San Antonio is next at 21. Cuban's team picks up 23.7 fouls per game.

"Yeah, well, the two most aggressive teams have the best records, too," Ben Wallace said. "That's not a coincidence. We play aggressive defense all the time. They (Mavericks) mostly try to outscore teams."

Pistons coach Flip Saunders said that Cuban wasn't seeing the whole picture.

"He grew up in Indiana," Saunders said. "He grew up watching Bobby Knight's teams. They were the most aggressive teams in the Big Ten and they didn't pick up a lot of fouls."

Saunders' point being, the aggressive team usually gets the benefit of the whistle.

"What good defensive teams do, a lot of times, is do their dirty work early," Saunders said. "You beat people to spots and you are quicker to where you are supposed to be. You create a situation where they are following you rather than you following them."

By looking only at the numbers, Saunders said, Cuban was ignoring how the games are played.

"Both us and San Antonio, although we are aggressive defensive teams, but we're not really high in creating turnovers and making steals," he said. "We might be aggressive on the ball, but everybody else is disciplined. We pack it inside. Teams like Charlotte, who get a lot of steals, they are more aggressive on the perimeter and pick up more fouls. Our aggressiveness is more on the inside, and the same goes for San Antonio.

"To make a blanket statement like that, you aren't looking at the defense the teams are playing."

Cuban made his statement in defense of Dirk Nowitzki, who the Mavericks think is taking a beating from opposing defenses nightly and not getting to the free-throw line nearly enough. His free-throw attempts are down two a game. ( )

Cuban needs to just shut up. He is lucky that the refs love Nodickski and his flopping ways.

While I disagree with Cuban, was Ben Wallace's response supposed to refute him? I mean, best records? Cuban could whack that softball toss: "Yes you have the best records... because you're getting the fewest fouls called while playing the most aggressive defense."

Exactly, I hate that crap about being aggressive all the time to get beneficial calls. Those teams are daring you refs to call them straight 5 fouls in the first 2 minutes, once you blinked, you have to be "consistent", and let them get away with everything. They are both great teams, but what's not fair is just not fair. The rules are the rules, no if and when and who. Why this simple concept is so frigging difficult to capture? Why should teams or plays refed differently because of the ways they play? I didn't see that in the rule book, that there is a converter to evaluate the degree of aggressiveness to be associated with the rules. NBA is the most annoying team sport, I hate it and I still love it

The league, the refs, the coaches, the players, the so-called experts are saying if you pack your car occasionaly at wrong spots, your car will be towed; but if you pack wrong everyday, nobody will care. If you hurt someone intentionally once or twice, they will arrest you; but if you make a living to hurt people out there everyday, as long as you don't kill anyone, you are free to go. Just great!

I dont think this is true about the Spurs and Pistons getting away with calls. It is more the fact that they are aggressive but very disciplined.

Even if they are given a benefit, I like it. Teams need to stop playing p***y ball. The next time someone calls Artest or Bowen too physical (ahem...Allen) should just be called a b**** on the spot by someone. I would love to be there in the middle of a press conference next time he complains about someone, just yell out b**** at the top of my lungs.

yeah to me thats cool and all... maybe everyone should toughen up a bit.. but consistency is all i want... IE how they ref YAO... he gets hacked all game no call, he then gets called for BS fouls 3 times a game so really giving him only 3 fouls to play with.. they treat him like a FU$@#ING rookie still... PI%$##@ESS me off

Since they win the most often, they also have to foul less at the end of the game in order to stop the clock and force the other teams to make free throws.

Let's see each team's number of fouls in the first 45 minutes of a game.

Mark Cuban complaining about refs giving people unfair treatment is like Tara Reid complaining about other famous people getting free booze and drugs.

I agree 100 percent. It's the DISCIPLINE defense. It's not really because they are purely agressive like everyone's saying. It's because they play defense the correct way with their feet, and not with their not hands. It's a matter of putting yourself in the right position defensively to stop your opponent (always in front of your man).

Just count the number of times Dallas tries to reach in with their hands versus great discipline team's defense such as Detroit and San antonio. Just watch and compare and you will see the difference. Dirk and co doesn't know how to play defense and to make up for it, they would reach in all the time. Seattle's defense is the same way.

honestly i hate this foul count crap. i am a ref myself and i don't sit there and count fouls on each team and split it evenly. i just call it..and go on with my life. just last week a coach was whining bout his team not being called for enuf fouls. i was like wtf? u want me to call more??

but the again i dont know how the nba does it. i am sure there was special rules to promote entertaintment. like the clear path foul so we can see more dunks or somethign.
