Guys, forgive me for the lack of an internet link, but just now Rich Lord was reading from a report that Mark Cuban is interested in buying the Houston Astros. Take it for what it's worth, it's coming from Rich Lord, but how do you feel about this? Would you be happy with Mark Cuban as the owner of the Astros?
No, no, no, no. I think you heard him wrong. It started off by them saying he got clearance from MLB to bid for the Rangers. He then simply asked, would he come down to Houston to attempt to buy the Astros if he failed in Arlington? I don't think he was saying he wants to or is interested but rather just throwing something out there to talk about.
I hope Cuban makes a bid for the Astros if it doesn't work with the Rangers, wasn't he teaming up with Nolan Ryan?
First off, I hate Mark Cuban just as much as the next guy. However i would love for him to buy the Astros. Cuban cares about winning. You can see how committed he is to the Mavericks and how much he cares about winning. The Astros front office hasn't been up to par the last couple of years. The organization needs to take a change in directions and Mark Cuban can ensure this. I love the Astros, but a change like this is long overdue.
BTW, if Cuban was successful in buying the Rangers, wouldn't that free Nolan Ryan to pursue buying elsewhere? I know, I'm dreaming.
MLB wants nothing to do with Cuban. But he's exactly who the creditors in Hicks' bankruptcy are throwing out there as the competitive bidder to foul up Ryan's purchase of the Rangers.
really? cause i think he'd love the Carlos Lee-style splash deals and wouldn't be disciplined enough to build a farm system.
I think he's actually much more forward-looking with the Mavericks than he's given credit for. For a long time, he was acquiring assets that he kept flipping into better assets over and over (back when he got Jamison and all that mess). While they were splashy deals, they didn't directly improve the team in the short term, but they gave them lots of tradable assets to build on. While obnoxious, he's a very, very smart guy. Assuming he understands the differences between the NBA and MLB, I think he'd recognize the need to invest in the farm. Even with his pockets, he wouldn't be willing to lose the money needed to build a team with a massive payroll.
