http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3036829 I hearby name this offseason...the summer of whine.
I think there's a chance he does get moved - Starver is a nitwit overly obsessed with reducing payroll and keeps shooting himself in the foot trying to do so (note to owners - keep the draft picks, lose the role playing vets if you want to cut your cap number). The Marion - Amare tensions have probably gotten to the point where D'Antoni and Nash can't keep them in a team mentality. Marion hates that he's never been given star status despite outplaying some many. Sending him East is the obvious move. Maybe they could send him to the Nets for Jefferson & spare parts. Chicago for Gordon, Thomas, and etc? Wish we could get him, but dealing to a potential playoff rival never makes sense. Lord knows it'd be a fantastic deal for us. Evan
wow..didnt see that coming..dont think the lakers have much or anything at all that the suns would want other then kobe.. Lamar would somewhat make a lil sense, but it'd take more then just Odom to get Marion..
You know, it's one thing to pull this card in May or June. It's completely different to pull it in late September or October.
For some reason I picture him with the Bulls over any other team. Their youth, defensive emphasis, and lack of a genuine #1 option just seems to the best fit for him. I don't think Marion will ever be a #1 option, but in that system I think he would flourish best second only to the team he's currently with.
How so? He couldn't be a franchise guy, but you could argue that he's the top secondary guy in the league. Gives you 19-9, is in his prime, can defend 2 positions very well, shoots a good percentage with range, gives you nice help D, steals, and weakside blocking, and it would be a stretch to say he's a liability in any aspect. He's not the best with handling the ball and doesn't create for others, but that's pretty much it. Only other knock I can think of is he gets pissy about not being loved enough for what he brings to the table. Any team in the league would be instantly and significantly upgraded by adding on Marion. Evan
LOL...YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING. Probably the best defender in the league. pulls down 12 13 boards a game...scores about 20. he's not worth 20 mil, but he's def. not overrated.
It's true. There are 2 important people that have overrated him, though...himself and his agent. But everyone else gives him appropriate credit, I think. Great player...but $20 million has to mean championships are coming.
Marion may not be overrated in general, but I agree with he Jayz that he seems overrated in his own mind. The guy is a great, great, role player. He is an offensive non-factor against quality defense squads, further, his nuts dissappear and his shots are shaky as the stakes rise (late in games, late in the playoffs). Also, while he is a super rebounder and fine defender, I would not say he is a shut down defensive player. I don't seem to remember him slowing Parker, nor Manu nor Duncan much the two times the Suns had potential titles in their grasp (07 and 05)--and I seem to recall Marion at different times drawing those guys and those guys still making lots of big plays. Overall, if Shawn Marion is your best player, your team is going to stink. How about the deal below (have to go down in December though), Lakers get the edge in talent, Phx gets the edge in contract value (Kwame expires and Walton and Turiaf are good value contracts). Incoming Players Marcus Banks 6-2 PG from UNLV 4.9 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 1.3 apg in 11.1 minutes Boris Diaw 6-8 PF from France (Foreign) 9.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.8 apg in 31.1 minutes Shawn Marion 6-7 PF from UNLV 17.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 1.7 apg in 37.6 minutes Outgoing Players Ronny Turiaf 6-9 PF from Gonzaga 5.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 0.9 apg in 14.9 minutes Luke Walton 6-8 SF from Arizona 11.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.3 apg in 33.0 minutes Kwame Brown 6-11 C from Glynn Academy (HS) 8.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.8 apg in 27.6 minutes Lamar Odom 6-10 PF from Rhode Island 15.9 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 4.8 apg in 39.3 minutes Phoenix Trade Breakdown Change in Team Outlook: +8.9 ppg, +9.4 rpg, and +4.0 apg.
More fringe Rockets fans than I thought in here which is fine, but why are we so anxious to see how the Lakers' possibilities shape out? Send em all East
Yeah, I suspect he'll be moved - and within a week. But, Chicago? With Deng? And Sarver then having to pony up for the shoot first Gordon? Nah, not there. Here? Start with Shane (+ Rafer) and Phoenix will listen. But should Morey consider it? Lakes? It's Odom/Bynum for (fill in the blank). Speaking of overrated, start with Odom. Nice player. If a Free Agent, tho, would he command anything 'better' than a max MLE? I doubt it. Utah for AK47? Maybe, but I doubt it. Nets for RJ? Maybe. Pacers for O'Neal? Why not? Maybe Kerr will be totally addle pated and send him to Shaq for Twoine and White Chocolate (LOL).
I find it funny that you're arguing against him being overrated...yet you overrate his statistics. Last year: 17.5ppg and 9.8 rpg. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/shawn_marion/index.html
