I heard most of it on Wednesday while driving home and he was very bland. It was so bad that I'll give it one more try before not listening to it any more. Mario needs to bring a lot more to the table. When he was a player, Mario was a great interview because of his frank comments and insight into the NBA. Wednesday he sounded like a coach who didn't want to say anything that could get him into trouble. Remember the Dom Capers or (the worst ever) Jack Pardee shows? To take it a step further (please don't slam me for voicing an opinion), but he didn't sound very knowledgeable about the Rockets. Did anyone else listen to it? Am I being too hard on him?
i've said this before. whoever is running the Rocket's front office have no idea what they're doing. look who they've hired since Calvin's been gone. Clyde Drexler, Cynthia Cooper, Mario Elie, and Matt Bullard. Bullard's the only decent hire. the rest suck as commentators or analysts.
i heard the first half of it, myself. i was also pretty disappointed - in the beginning, i'm like 'okay, they're just shooting the **** right now, they're about to get into some good, deep analysis...' - and i just kept waiting. [Peter Griffin's "Wait for it, Wait for it..."] They never got into anything deep. It's like they forget that SPORTS FANS are listening to their broadcast; we're not casual listeners that just HAPPENED to come across their AM frequency, and we don't need surface-level oohs and ahhs to remind us who our players are. Mario was less than super.
The thing is, Joe Kleine has a championship ring now, so other then the shot against Phoenix he can't trash talk him to much.
The problem is that they're willing to hire any former player from the Rockets' championship years to do commentary/analysis. Of course, the problem is that most of those guys aren't very good at anything besides playing basketball. What's next, hiring Mutombo after he retires to do the play-by-play? On a second thought, I would watch that...
The thing is that Mario used to be a great interview. I blame HIM for the sorry radio show. This week, all he did was repeat a bunch of babble without saying anything insightful. I'll give him one more shot before I lump it with the worthless golf hour show. So many of the callers kissing up to him didn't help but he still struck out when good questions were asked.
