All of JVG talk, it sounds like he really wants a back-up PG. So what if we draft this guy? I think he's the least talked about guy. We may all be surprised if he is picked.
Seemed like first and foremost on JVG's mind was to get a regular-sized SG (at least 6'6"). That seemed like the thing he emphasized the most (he hardly even mentioned the PF position). I suspect that we go swingman in the draft (Brewer, Carney, Gay or Roy depending on who's avaliable), and then go after a PG in free agency (either Mike James or Speedy Claxton).
I'd be surprised if we pick Marcus Williams. I'm not sure he has the right statistical profile for a good NBA player, and that's something the Rockets will probably rely on heavily. He apparently ranks very poorly in terms of his athleticism, and his numbers in college (other than the assist rate) weren't stellar. Very poor in getting steals and rebounds (the Rockets would ideally want a guard who can force turnovers and rebound well). Here's an analysis of point guards in the draft: http://www.hoopsanalyst.com/0506ew10.htm He's probably the best PG available, but I don't know if he's a sure thing. I certainly think it would be a mistake to take him over a big 2-guard.
Williams was a scorer coming out of HS, but Calhoun forced him to become a more traditional PG like he had in Talik Brown. I think Williams has the skills to fit our system well, but he has some serious issues. His head is not always in the game, he lacks tons of intangibles, and don't forget he should have been kicked out of school along with Price for stealing the laptops.
If JVG and the rest of the Rockets management truly do care about body fat % like some have said, then Williams won't be in a Rocket uniform with a horrible (by NBA standards) 12.5% body fat.
The guy is a flat out basketball player beyond the stats and the measurements; he makes his presence known on the court. He wouldn't be a bad pick at all(unless his teammate Rudy Gay were on the board) and would probably be an impact player his first year. One of the best passers I've seen in years and a good scorer as well(check NCAA tournament).
I think you guys are really overblowing the byte about needing a backup point guard. He emphasized that our biggest need is a tall shooting guard.
If we keep gloating on Brewer I'm sure we can move him up a few notches to #7 or #6. Look what not gloating on Carney did. He's down to # 13. Be ready to drop-kick and everyone go long. Anyone's guess on this roll. I like the moving down and having three pick out of the top 32, like we did the year we welcomed that really immature guy from Temple in swap for THREE 1st round picks. Mind you - that's three 1st round picks. Believe it or not, our most rabid fan base is hacked by experts because we toss around some great legit stuff to consider. We have done some of the best research out there. Other people know this and their team is not the Rockets. We should pound Morrison into the dirt so he will fall. Or that other guy you mentioned in the top 4.
I think JVG saying that we won't get a starter in this draft is bull crap, who else do we have starting with our current lineup? My ideal draft is as follows #1 No. 8 pick and Sto for No. 12 and Darko. We pick Brewer with our 12th pick. #2 No. 8, TMAC and Stro for No. 13 Iverson and Iguodala. Once again we pick Bewer with the 13th pick. These are very wishful hopes but I really don't see us just using the 8th pick and picking straight up.
Oh, I'm sorry, you're happy with our no. 4 spot and having Juwan start again and having Stro come off the bench and just jumping (no basketball skills at all). With Darko, Yao can work more freely in the post since Darko can knock down 10-15 foot jumpers. As for the TMAC trade, I really hope he comes back and plays injury free but I really don't see that happening and he's really fallen in love with the jump shot and doesn't attack the basket quite often. This is what wins games in the playoffs, players who can attack the basket at will and shoot a good number of free-thows.
Stop right there. That's why the first proposal was so bad. Orlando would have to seriously be on the crack pipe during the phone call for them to give up Darko to jump from 11 to 8. Not to mention, with his stock rising, Brewer isn't likely to be there at 11 now anyway. As far as the TMac trade, it's silly because Philly would never do it. Even if Tracy proved to be 100% healthy, what do they gain? Let's assume that Tracy = Allen in value/impact on the game...well, then it's Stro for Andre. That makes zero sense from the 76er's perspective. In terms of the Rockets perspective, Iverson isn't tall enough to effectively feed the post when Yao is being fronted, which happens a lot these days. He would be forced to play on the weak side of the floor and off the ball while a taller player worked with Yao in the post. The reason Iverson works semi-well with Webber is because he works from the high post where fronting isn't going to work. Iverson dominates the ball to be effective, and that goes against everything the Rockets try to do with Yao. Silly trade for several reasons.
That's why I said it was wishful thinking. Like everyone here I hope that we take full advantage of our No. 8 spot and address all our needs in this draft and off-season. I just don't want us to be stuck with David Wesley and Juwan Howard again to carry our team when one of our stars go down.
BTW, does anyone here know what ever happened to Anderson Hunt. I think this guy was the best player on the great UNLV team in the 90's. Why didn't he play in the NBA?
if Brewer is gone, i hope Williams is the guy the rox would pick ... he would be our starting PG for years ...
