I hear this quite often from fans of other teams around the league. What do they mean by "they don't like the way he does business"?

The Rockets' front office seems to be very professional...

Then why do they keep dealing with him?

This. Morey is one of the smartest people in the room. He's tricky and crafty and relentless. He's also smug. People don't like people who are both better at the job than them AND is sort of arrogant about it. Trust me, story of my life :p jk

I can also imagine the whole GM circle is sort of an old boy's club and Morey's moves of embarrassing other teams AND being the harbinger of this new analytic movement means he threatens a lot of the old guard. New guard people get smarter and want to beat him too, again probably because he strikes me as smug.

I think some don't now haha. People are more wary and probably now double check any deal they do with Morey first. His 'steals' are going to become less and less as others wise up (and are more alert around him), OR the steals will just be less patently obvious steals (I hope more of this than the former).

You also have to still deal with people that have what you want sometimes...regardless of how much you dislike them. That's life, and that's certainly business.

Yeah, there has to be something about Morey that turns off other GMs. He wound up as 9th in voting for NBA Executive of the Year. This after nabbing Dwight Howard.

A lot of the ole-school circle-jerk back-slappers aren't into his Moneyball philosophy which involves him constantly flipping players. He doesn't overpay Joe Schmoe players but will overpay to get that One Superstar. Plus they think he overrates his assets.

There's probably some jealousy due to the big fish he's caught, but you can bet more than a few GMs are smirking in their sleeves after he whiffed on Bosh and Parsons.

I'm guessing players and agents don't much care for him either.

He does deals and facilitates a TON of deals. If they don't like him they are still talking with him on the phone. This thread is pointless, has no source or reference.

These same fans would call him one of the best GMs in the game if he was running their team.

I really do not think this is true.

I don't have exact numbers but I feel like we make more trades than most teams in the league (be it draft, offseason, trade deadline, etc). Seems like we are always active in trade talk.

If nobody wanted to deal with us, we won't be making a lot of deals.

Agreed - I think the quote about Parsons is so telling. His problem was not as much with the dollars as much as the fact that the contract was untradable. How does that make you feel as a player? I'd happily have signed you if I only I could ship you out in a year or two, but if I'm actually stuck with you, nevermind. Makes a player feel all warm and fuzzy inside, I'm sure.

Harden Trade: AT THE TIME OKC was getting a bunch of value back. They got a scorer (Martin), a young player (Lamb), and a draft pick (turning into Adams). That was a haul for a non-starting player.

Lin and Asik's contract: Chicago and New York could have matched those contracts but they chose not to. Hell, New York was the one that bluffed and said they would match any offer for Lin.

I don't know what else could be viewed as doing "bad business".
