I do not see the Yankees picking up his contract. I cannot believe that teams structure contracts like this:

Ramirez, 30, was signed as a free agent by former Boston general manager Dan Duquette in December 2000. Ramirez is scheduled to earn $20 million in 2005, $19 million in 2006, $18 million in 2007 and $20 million in 2008.

He also is due $4 million a year in deferred, no-interest salary from 2004-10, and he's still owed $10 million of his $16 million signing bonus, the Herald reported on its Web site.

The guy is a great hitter, .325 avg 37 HR last year but it`s contracts like these that are just plain crazy. IMO no one will pick him up off waivers and we`ll see a trade in the off season with the Sox picking up quite a bit of the contract

I hope the Yankees do pick him up. I want them to go bankrupt.

Who wants to start a pool on what Manny Ramirez' new moniker will be?

    I'll guess Thom Yorke.

These damn Red Sox won't do what it takes to win. The owner talks about winning, but clearly he's not committed to it.

    (sound familiar? ;) )

Manny has ready used his name change quota. He'll have to make a significant contribution to the tip jar for another name change...

    Jay Fiedler, maybe?

Yea, I saw that on ESPN's website this morning. As ROCKSS mentioned, it is highly unlikely that anybody will bite on this. The Yankees are the only ones that could afford to take on his whole contract. Everyone else will require Boston to have pay some of his salary. But you have to look at it like this: if no one claims him, you have a player who now knows that he is obviously not wanted by his own team. A trade would have to be imminent, IMO, or you are going to have problems all season, hell, the rest of his tenure in Boston.

As for me - I always knew that there was a possibility that this could happen. Yes, I did change my moniker to "Comic Book Guy", but everyone here knows me as "Manny". So, regardless of what happens to the real Manny Ramirez, I am not changing my name here. I may see if Clutch can shorten it to "Manny" since most people refer to me as "Manny" anyway instead of "Manny Ramirez".

And RM95 - Thom Yorke?? Puh-leaze! If I decided to go that route, it would be Richard D. James aka the Aphex Twin. Get with the times, man!:D ;)

how about "manrammer"? While a bad shortening, it has limitless potential as a gimmick account.

Amen to that. I love Manny in Boston's lineup, but what a pr!ck.

Not sure why they waived him, though. Nobody will pick him up, and it lowers his trade value. Am I missing something?

    Beginning of the end?

Or does young Theo know what he's doing.

All I know is the Greek God of walks Kevin Youkilis is coming up next season. Watch out MLB.

That would go down as one of the best (or possibly the worst) moniker in the history of CC.

I think he would be a great pickup for the Yankees. Just play him at DH and move Giambi back to first. After they sign Vlad Guererro, the only weak spot in their lineup will be Aaron Boone.

    Soriano
    Jeter
    Ramirez
    Giambi
    Guererro
    Williams
    Matsui
    Posada
    Boone

There is no way that team doesn't win the World Series, given at least mediocre pitching.

I hope that happens. I need to find a better way to spend my time in the summer rather than watching baseball. If the Yankees were somehow able to take Manny plus Guererro, I'd never watch the sport again.

Rocketman Tex -- my point, ultimately, is that every team is forced to cut costs at some point...the Giants have done it...the Braves have done it...now the Red Sox. And the teams that won the last 2 World Series have done so with payrolls significantly less than the Astros.

Y'all might think I'm smoking loco weed here, but I honestly don't think that Steinbrenner can afford the rest of Manny's contract AND sign Guerrero. I expect Vlad to be signed around 20 million a year for at least 5 years, probably longer. And of course, that doesn't even factor in current Yankee salaries like Contreras, Mussina, Giambi, etc.

I partially agree. I think he could afford both contracts but it would keep him from making large changes to his pitching staff which must be done.

You have to take into account that the Rocket and Tubby are both coming off the bools, so they will save a chunk of change there. Also, the Yankees have a great revenue stream. I think they were still turning a profit at $180 mil payroll. I think the Boss would even consider operating at a loss if it meant winning. Love him or hate him, Steinbrenner does whatever he can to put the Yankees in the best situation to win.
