Has anyone else questioned why Major League Baseball requires managers, bench coaches, heck anyone that's not a player (excluding trainer) to wear baseball uniforms. I mean seeing Jimy Williams' tight and ripped body in Astros pinstripes looks quite silly. I mean I understand it's a tradition throughout baseball, but what's the need? It's just excess spending. Injured players don't need to dress up in full jerseys, pants, shoes and hats. It's stupid. Can you imagine Rudy in shorts?!?! Even on the amateur level they exist. High school, college; it looks sooo tacky and wastes money. I think that managers should look more "professional" and should wear something unique. Definitley not suits, but not something that makes others think you're about to pinch hit. Maybe something like NFL coaches wear; polo-type shirts with team colors/logo on it that are light and comfortable. Thoughts idea or suggestions?
I watched baseball for many years before I started watching other sports, and I've always found it funny seeing coaches on the sidelines in suits. I don't know, it's just a matter of perspective. To me it's not that big of a deal.
Sorry MM, I just had to point this part of your opening part out because it sounds like the opening to one of Seinfeld's acts. "I mean, whats the deal with baseball?? Why do they call it a bullpen, when there is no bull and no pen??" Seriously, there is not a scarier sight then seeing the likes of Jimy, Don Zimmer and Bobby Cox wear a uniform.
Of all the major sports, only baseball allows its coaches/managers to step onto the field of play. The logic being any participant on the field should be in uniform, thus we get fat old men wearing tight pants. Who really cares?
Interestingly enough, there is no rule specifying that managers have to be in uniform, although there is for coaches: "No person shall be allowed on the playing field during a game except players and coaches in uniform, managers, news photographers authorized by the home team, umpires, officers of the law in uniform and watchmen or other employees of the home club."
When it comes to baseball history, you and I think a lot alike. As soon as I started reading this thread, I thought "I need to find a picture of Connie Mack and post it."
Worse than that, did you see halftime of game 3 of the NBA finals? Jimmy Kimmel put up a chilling picture of Van Gundy in a Rockets clown suit. Anyone have that pic by any chance?
