At least 10 people are dead, more than 30 others injured and two police officers were shot in New Orleans after police said a vehicle intentionally drove into a crowd during New Year's celebrations early Wednesday, in what the city's mayor called a "terrorist attack."

The City of New Orleans confirmed the casualty figures in a statement on its website and said people were hurt in a “mass casualty incident involving a vehicle that drove into a large crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street.”

The suspect crashed the vehicle and also opened fire on two police officers, police said. Authorities are also investigating multiple suspected improvised explosive devices linked to the attack — the FBI said it was not known if they are viable explosives but urged the public to avoid the area.

A federal law enforcement official has told NBC News that the suspect is believed to be dead. The official says the FBI is investigating this as a potential terrorist attack. You heard the police chief say it was terrorism, and then the FBI official seeming to contradict her. That was just the FBI being careful. They are obviously investigating the motive.

"We do know that the city of New Orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack," Mayor Mayor LaToya Cantrell said at a news conference, adding that she was in touch with the White House.

Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department, said the suspect intentionally drove a pickup truck along Bourbon Street with the aim of causing mass casualties.

The suspect drove around barricades erected to stop traffic entering Bourbon Street, due to his "intentional mindset," Kirkpatrick said, adding he was "hellbent on creating carnage."

"This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could. It was not a DUI situation," she said.

The dozens injured were being treated in local hospitals, as were the two injured officers, who were in a stable condition, she said.

Kirkpatrick said it was unclear how many victims were locals, bur said that according to preliminary information "it seems the majority are locals versus tourists."

Contrary to the mayor's use of the term, FBI Special Agent Alethea Duncan, who is taking over the investigation, said "this is not a terrorist event."

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry called the incident a "horrific act of violence" in a post on X and said he was praying for the victims.

Historic Bourbon Street, in the French Quarter, is a popular tourist area filled with bars and restaurants and was expected to be busy overnight.

Footage shot by onlookers and uploaded to social media showed a huge police presence on Bourbon Street and Canal Street.

Police said Tuesday that they expected the city to be busy as locals and visitors rang in the new year. New Orleans Police Department said it would be staffed at 100% and would draft in another 300 officers to help keep the peace.

Man that Twitter thread is funny because it's just a bunch of people praying it's a Muslim. I'm assuming you are one of them?

Its a odd thing to pray for.

It is a terrible thing to pray for.......because if it is, it continues the world wide narrative that Islam is killing cultures world wide, and needs to be sent back to the middle east....

And that narrative is getting stronger, it is what happens when like Sweden you let in 2m people and they don't speak the language or can get a job, there was no integration plan, you get gangs of young men basically shutting down areas because they have no outlet.....

Islam is a problem for Western Culture's make no mistake, but the real problem is poverty.

A bunch of wealthy people want us normal folks to believe our social media feeds of angry brown people doing bad things is the ubiquitous state of affairs that is keeping your rent payments up to where it's 70% of your monthly income.

Islam was our friend apparently when we funded Islamic fundies to combat socialist uprisings throughout the Middle East because the Islamic fundies were okay with western exploitation of labor and resources from these regions as long as the fundies maintain hierarchical power. And then the local populace of these regions saw the exploitation and harm western powers were doing to them and unironically used religious liberation ideology to combat said western expansion. Its a funny ironic and sad circle.

Palestinian liberation causes is a peak example of this. The rabid genocide apologist today were the same people who hated the secular PLO resistance that was advocating for socialist liberation instead of Islamic fundie liberation but western powers and Israel didn't like that so they backed the religious fundies(Hamas) to overtake the PLO. If you are a Israeli expansionist, you would rather Hamas be the face of Palestinian liberation than the PLO.

This is why I have no sympathies for people who target out Islam as some unique evil religion.

The truck had a Texas license plate and crossed the border at Eagle Pass two days prior to the attack. WOW

How can anyone say that we don't need to secure the border to know who is coming in and out? Liberals have been fighting this for YEARS. Unreal.

    LOL, it absolutely does not.

Suspect was wearing camouflage and had a black flag on the back of the pickup. Likely a Middle Eastern terrorist of some type. Terrorism just flowing freely across our Southern border and liberals are STILL arguing against securing it. Just unbelievable.

I dunno that narrative that it is only Muslims that do mass killings has been shattered the past ten years so it’s an odd thing to be so confident about.

This past decade we should have learned that extremism can come from anywhere. If you are in submerged in a culture where your cleric is telling you constantly that things are dire and your world will end if you don’t act… and then you mix that brainwashing with mental illness, loneliness which can lead to suicidal risk, people in that state can act to take out as many as they can in as public a way as possible.

Our society along with other societies (of course societies in the Middle East) need their people to be healthy mentally with extremism gutted from social and political circles first and foremost. Extremist ideologies cannot be tolerated. Here in the US we used to not tolerate extremism but now it’s pretty widely embraced unfortunately and extremist factions are even heralded as heroes. Whether that be Luigi Magioni or Jan 6 insurrectionists or whatnot.

Then you need to foster community and wellness. Poverty is an issue but I’m one who truly believes living a healthy and safe life does not mean everyone needs to be driving cyber trucks. The most mentally unstable communities I’ve been around are in some of the communities I’ve lived in here in Texas where people had almost too much wealth, extreme politics, alcohol, time, and guns. Here in DFW one of those towns we lived in had almost a dozen guys go partake in January 6th. Toxic community breeds toxic outcomes at even higher earning levels.

On a micro level though it’s baffling to me that bourbon street doesn’t have what NYC put in place on sidewalks etc years ago. Those pillars are everywhere now to stop auto terrorist attacks on people walking the street or sidewalk. Why was a car anywhere near bourbon st. on NYE anyways? The drunk driving danger alone should have necessitated blocked street everywhere around the FQ.

    Terrible.

These driving-into-the-crowd attacks seem to be happening more and more. Maybe we should ban cars?
Or maybe cars don't kill people. People kill people.
