Ground Zero Suicide Inspired By Election Result

NEW YORK - A 25-year-old man from Georgia who was apparently distraught over President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election shot and killed himself at ground zero. Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.

Veal's mother said her son was upset about the result of the presidential election and had driven to New York, Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, told The New York Times in Sunday's editions.

Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry.

"I'm absolutely sure it's a protest," Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's supervisor at the lab, told The Daily News. "I don't know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic."

Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority.

There was an article on msn or somewhere (too lazy) that was stating that post-election depression has hit really hard for many folks in the cities. Psychiatrists' have said many of their new patients have cited the election results as a cause of a nervous breakdown or depression of some sort.

Again, Bush supporters, relish your win, you're getting everything you want. I'm going to take my free meal tickets and continue to waste the countries' resources and when I start my company, I'm going to outsource at the first opportunity and get a tax cut.

Wow .. . someone who care so much . . he killed himself..

yea .. that is joke waiting to happen

I feel bad for him . .I can only imagine how he must have felt
I think Bush sucks. . but this guy . .. took it to another level
He simply could not live in a world with Bush as President
    for 4 more years

I wonder what he thought bush was going to do

rather than insult the guy . . .perhaps we figure him out more
so we can prevent it in the future

    Word.

In any case, I can understand the depression after Bush's re-election. So many people poured their hearts and souls into an attempt to get Bush out of office, only to be out-voted by a mere 1% majority.

Hell, I had a hard time functioning for a couple days after the election, too.

But I'm not sure that killing yourself is the answer.

This is called natural selection...and I would say the same thing if roles were reversed (Bush supporter reacting to a Kerry win). I have no sympathy for this guy. He actually bought into the whole doomsday propecies of many of the celebrity loonies out there. Rather selfish thing to do if you think about it...was going to get married and he just throws it all away.

Sorry, but I don't have much compassion for this headcase. I mean honestly, how much is your day to day life going to change no matter who is President? You still get up and go to work every morning.

Obviously this guy had more going on in his head than the election. Funny how the article doesn't mention that.

I don't think so, unless you find shooting yourself in the face funny. Darwin awards are for those who kill themselves in stupid ways, not for stupid reasons.

Darwin Awards are for people who by their own stupidity remove themselves as contributors to the gene pool. Unless this guy had some very serious mental issues, I think he qualifies. He was young, health, betrothed... what a waste!
