Well, I'm not saying he deserved it,but frankly, he should never have been trying to beat the dog to death in the first place. I suppose he was intending to shoot the dog, but he wanted to punish it first (as if Death is not enough) and ended up shooting himself instead. I'd say this one deserves a Darwin award . . .

Man Beating Dog With Gun Shoots Himself

WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) -- A man trying to beat his dog to death with a gun was fatally wounded when it apparently went off accidentally, police said.

Raymond Poore Jr., 43, called his wife at work Thursday and told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill the animal, police Capt. David Sobonya said.

The wife came home about 6 p.m. and found her husband unconscious, with a number of dog bites and scratches. Emergency medical personnel discovered that Poore had been shot. He was pronounced dead at Winchester Medical Center.

Sobonya said Poore must have beaten the 30-pound shar-pei with the gun that went off. He said the stock of the weapon, a combination rifle and shotgun, was broken and there appeared to be blood and dog hair on it.

The dog was in the custody of an animal control officer. Sobonya had no detail on how badly it was injured.

Jello is that where Shendoah U is? If so I was there a few years ago visiting a friend of mine, during the summer festival (Apple Blossom or something)

Winchester, Va. seems to be filled with idiots. I went to their local paper to see if the dog was okay (He's injured, but will be okay. He's in SPCA custody). And this was the story on the front page of the paper:

Clarke Man Killed by Own Truck

    By Val Van Meter
    The Winchester Star

PINE GROVE — A Bluemont man was killed Saturday night when he was run over by his own vehicle.

Virginia State Police Trooper Jerry Bosserman said Gregory Lee Franks, 41, had driven to a private residence on Honeysuckle Lane in Shenandoah Retreat about 7 p.m.

Bosserman said when Franks got out of his 1979 Ford Ranger pickup, he left it in gear with the motor running.

Franks apparently tried to get back into the truck while it was moving and was knocked down, the trooper said. The truck ran over him.

A resident saw the truck on top of Franks and called the Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, which used air bags to lift the truck off the victim, Bosserman said.

Franks was pronounced dead at the scene by medical examiner Greg Locke.

Bosserman said alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, which is still under investigation.

Sounds like there may be a little too much cousin luvin' going on in Virginia.

A sad update to a disturbing story. I called the SPCA in Virginia to check on the dog (Mrs JB was determined to drive out there and give it a home if no one else had) and they said that the owner (the wife of the man who was killed) had the dog put to sleep.

    :(

There is a fantastic scene in 25th Hour (Spike Lee's latest) where the main character decides to save a dog that has been severely beaten and left for dead. It's a smart bit of writing, because you automatically love the character for the rest of the movie (or at least I did). Great, great flick, by the way.

I agree. It may be the most well written movie I saw all last year.

That's a terrible story. However, for all we know this dog could have been a menace. As much as this story pisses me off, the stories where a pit bull mauls some poor young woman or child to death piss me off even more.

I'm not saying this was that type of dog, but it very well could have been. Plus, I'm sure the dog was suffering, so putting it to death was probably the most humane thing to do.

Shar-pei's become very violent and mean after a certain age. My sister had one. When it suddenly started attacking them they had her put to sleep. It was out of concern for the safety of my nephew and the neighborhood kids.

Somehow, I think the dimwitted trailer park dweller using a loaded rifle as a baseball bat is more of a menace ... but that's just me.

And treating the dog for his injuries and giving him a loving home would have been the MOST humane thing to do. But killing him is certainly a close second. :(

I'm not defending the idiot guy, I was just saying if this was one of those mean dogs who had the potential to kill a person, then putting it to sleep may have been the best thing to do. I doubt this was that type of dog, but it sounds like it wasn't the sweetest thing, seeing as how the guy apparently had multiple dog bites and scratches.

That being said, if the psycho wanted to get rid of the dog he should have called the pound and let them decide what to do with it.

If the injuries were not supposed to cause lifelong suffering, then I agree.

I'm with DCKid on this one. Perhaps (probably?) it was an issue of bad dog ownership, but it isn't exactly a tragedy to euthanize a dog that has a history of attacking people. Thousands are killed for less than that.
