I hate starting yet another Badiane post, but this is actually new information. I came across this article from the weekend, I didn't appear see in the token Malick Badiane post for last week http://www.fiba.com/pages/en/news/latest_news_article.asp?r_act_news=5560&r_cat=8&page=1 29/01/2005 SEN - Badiane on the mend FRANKFURT (FIBA World Championship 2006) - Senegalese international Malick Badiane's star was on the rise until November, when he went down with a serious shoulder injury. The 2.08m power forward, who turned 21 on New Year's Day, was the 44th pick in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets and this was supposed to be a big year for the raw talent who moved to Germany from Africa in April, 2002. Badiane wanted to show enough improvement in Europe this season to convince the Rockets that he was ready to make the switch to North America. The injury has hurt his chances, however. Badiane says he just wants to start playing again. He told PA International: "I think I will be back in a fortnight. I'm feeling good right now, but I need to be completely sure that I don't have any problems before making a return. "The doctors have checked me over and told me that if I don't aggravate it and stick to my regime of lifting every day, then I may be back in 10 days." It is no secret why Houston used a draft pick on Badiane. He is big and strong, and the Rockets were no doubt impressed by his ability to crash the boards and block shots. He will play a significant role for Senegal when they try to qualify for FIBA World Championship 2006 in Japan. Badiane spent the 2004 summer training in the States and was believed to be edging ever closer to a move to the NBA before the injury. He had just had his best game in the Euroleague with six points, seven rebounds and four blocks against Pau Orthez on November 17 when he hurt his shoulder. He had to have an operation to fix the problem, and that consigned him to more than two months of frustration on the sidelines. "It has been hard, I don't like to be sitting down, watching the games," admitted Badiane, who is hoping that representatives from Houston can assess his progress soon. "I have good contact with Houston and (scout) Dennis Lynch said he would come and see me in February. "It's a month when we have a lot of games so hopefully he can see me in action, either in the Euroleague or the Bundesliga." Without Badiane, the Skyliners have remained in contention in the Bundesliga, where they currently lie fourth. However in the Euroleague they have just three wins and eight defeats. A spate of injuries means they need Badiane now more than ever. "The coach tells me that they need me back and they need me to go straight into the team," he said. February is a big month for the Skyliners and Badiane with crucial Euroleague fixtures, including the replay of the controversial tie with Panathinaikos on February 7, the German BBL-Cup quarter-final as well as a big league game against RheinEnergie Cologne. "I hope he (Lynch) gets to see me in the Euroleague," Badiane said. "He likes to see the Euroleague games because it's far more physical than the Bundesliga." Wow! sound slike he was ahving a career year! I can't wait for the Rocks to get a PF that can average 6 points and 7 rebounds. Dang, I'll probably forget that Barkley ever played.....
I am working off of memory but going back the thread I started in November when he was injured, it was my impression he was being used much like Juwan and Mo and splitting time with the former starting PF, so he definitely was not playing 47 minutes a game. Yet the team's own PR on their site was touting him as their next star. Yet in three years he has gone from B league to A league backup PF last year, and then A league starter this year until the injury. So he has progressed and the Skyliners own PR talks him up as having progressed well. So if he can pull a Sura and return quickly then we can see in the rest of their season what he is made of. And if he has a chance next fall. I dare say it has been a long time since one of our PF's has blocked 4 shots in 24 or so minutes work. Or even 48 minutes for that matter. And if our two PF's could average 14 rb's per game we would all be ecstatic.
I wonder where this kid would get picked in the upcoming 2005 nba draft now that he is bigger and stronger Would he be a 1st round pick or stay around the 44th pick.
you may want to reserve that assessment the end of March (give him some time after returning from the injury)
I think the Euro games are 40 minutes, and players stats go up significantly in the NBA due to a lot more fouls being called. DD
He will not be in this year's draft. Rockets have his rights. He has played 3 games (at least) so far in the Euroleague. I bet he has played some more in the Bundesliga. He only played 22 minutes 30 seconds in that game. He was surely on his way to a double, and steadily improving his all around game. It was only the 3rd Euroleague game of the season and he had shown steady improvement up to that point he got injured. I liken him game to that of Samuel Dalembert from all indications.
badman may not be here next year, but the year after. two reasons: 1. a full season of being a starter in the A league with good production would mean he is ready. 2. this summer the only PF we are getting rid of is spoon because he is entering a contract year making him easy to move. the summer after that mo enters the final year of his deal and will be easy to move. then we will have room for badman to make his move.....summer '06 will be BADiane.
We need a powerforward that can use the term fortnight in a sentence. I doubt Mo Taylor has any idea what a fortnight is.
To MoT, a fortnight would be how he spends the night after eating beans for dinner. or More precisely, how he plays on game nights.
Fegwu I know he will not be in this years draft and I also know he was the rockets 44th pick in 2003. I was just wondering out loud where he would go hypothetically if he was still available for the 2005 draft, especially if he is a 21 yr. old 6-11 athletic freak. Would the rockets have used there 1st round pick on him and does it give them the flexability to use that pick in a trade.
I would bet that next year he would be a late 1st rounder, but my impression is that the Rox want to hold on to him - I think his purported skills fill a need with Yao and Tmac... now, if he is garbage as a player, then that is tough - but a strong rebounding-shot blocking PF would develop a nice nitch here
Now that is funny. Hey maybe we should get Man Boobs back because he uses great words in his sentences. He once used the word spry not so long ago. Actually I believe the fortnight thing is a language culture thingy. You will see it being used more often in England, Australia, New Zealand and other English speaking countries in Africa, Oceania and Asia. PS. It is conceivable that we could have Malick, Spanoulis, Swift, Antonio Daniels, Miles and Ike Diogu on our team next season. At least 3 those players or their equals. I see us really getting younger fats. Bowen will be gone. Charlie Wards's option won't be picked. Barret and Strick will be gone as well. Spoon could be moved as well as Motay. That means up to 7 including roster spot wasting Gaines subtractions from this year's playoffs team.
