So i've thought of a certain feature i really think would be appealing to car buyers....i'm interested in presenting this to an auto maker in the future, but I was wondering how i would get paid for something like this, if the feature is picked up. Think of it as something like the sun visor. That's a pretty good comparison, as it's nothing too complicated, but would literally help everyone in the driver's seat. If automobiles didn't have any and i came up with the idea of having sun visors, how would any compensation work?

I know designing and making one to get a patent is a way to start, but i also know they could possibly not be open to outside suggestions, so is anyone here in the automobile industry or familiar with presenting new ideas like this that could give me some advice? Thanks in advance.

Do you know any patent attorneys (or even agents)? That's where I'd start.

Don't go something like that alone.

I happen to have an uncle who did something similar to this. I know exactly how it's done, but I can't tell you how until you post your idea. I need to see where you're going with this.

I'm curious too. In general, if you have an idea, where do you go with it?

    ...or you could call Inventhelp.

They'll gladly send you a packet asking for everything you've worked on and a pretty much "air-tight" contract where you'll only give up only about 95% of any future revenue.

Are you inventing the visor that holds cd's? If so, I have bad news, my friend. No one really uses cd's anymore.

    You're right...attorneys bad.

Got a great idea? Stay away from patent lawyers.

Win the lottery? Do NOT hire an attorney OR an accountant.

Enjoying some R&R with the criminal justice system? Why waste the money...you can handle that crap.

Who needs specialists who have made a career out of these things?

I get a traffic ticket I handle it on my own... anyways, I want to know what the patent lawyer is going to do then. Like I said, I'm curious, so what do you want me to do - make an appointment with a lawyer to talk theory about an idea I don't have? I just want some insight.

I personally know a patent lawyer and used him for my start up. However I have my serious doubts about your idea. Sorry I am just a bit skeptical as I have quite a lot of experience with startups and ideas. Most likely 99.9% of the time someone has thought about it and has numerous patents around it already. Check it uspto.gov and search for patents similar to your idea. I can almost guarantee someone else already thought about it. Its quite hard to come up with any original ideas.

Come on, man. You're comparing a traffic ticket to this? Really??

Talk theory about an idea you "don't have"?? Um, no. I don't think you should go in to talk with ANYBODY about an idea you don't have.

Exactly. So I want to know how the process might work. I can't go sit down with a lawyer if I don't have an idea. How is that hard to follow? "Go see a patent lawyer" doesn't help me bub.

    OK, bub.

What do you want? Someone to draw you a picture of what do when you (don't?) have an idea? You're being a little ridiculous here...good luck with the idea you don't have.

Honestly, with your attitude, I think Inventhelp would be great for you.

Wow. Really??? WTF are you going to talk with him/her about? Your lack of ideas? Are you going to ask them for ideas? What's your game here, guy?

Working with a specialist in the specific field your interested in doesn't help you? Well then, good luck in your endeavors. I'm sure you'll do fine.

All he's asking for is what services a patent lawyer would provide for his client. If you don't know, then just say so.

I'm not a patent lawyer and I've never invented a thing. No, I don't know exactly. I have known some in this field and I do know they make a living helping people who have put in the time/work/effort to things like this.

This is like asking me what an accountant does. I don't know. But I think it's obvious, if you got tax/money questions: go see an accountant. That IS their specialty.

Asking if you should go in to see a patent attorney if you don't "have an idea" is like asking if you should go see an accountant without a dime to your name. It's ludicrous.

I understand that -- but I think he was just curious about what the actual steps were that a patent lawyer would take. That's why he was saying he can't setup an appointment with a lawyer to find out, as you suggested, when he doesn't have an idea. That would be like someone meeting with a defense attorney to discuss the steps the lawyer would take for a hypothetical crime the client never committed.

Exactly. So more or less, it's more like he's asking how to develop an idea. Right? That's the very crux of inventing. Brainstorm, plan, test, survey, develop, etc.

I'm pretty sure this is all done before you even consult with an attorney. I'm not trying to be a jerk here...but I almost felt as if I was being trolled. lol

...and I'm sure if you know of a good patent attorney out there, they'd be willing to maybe sit down with you and discuss these things without taking a bite out of your wallet.

Again, sorry if I came off as an ass, Ziggy.
