I'm here travelling in Asia now and last Thursday was in Sri Lanka. I was there mainly for non-vacation reasons but on Thursday I finally got some time off. I was hanging out at one of their beautiful beach areas and was talking to some of the other people there for a good time including a very beautiful girl who was of mixed ethnicity, sort of looked like a young Vanessa Williams but with lighter colored hair and skin. She was originally from Suriname but had been travelling the world and had decided to stay in Sri Lanka working at eco-tourism. I told her I was going back to Singapore the next day and then back to the US in a week and she told me I should stay in Sri Lanka and she would show me around the country. I was really tempted to do it right there and forget my job, my mortgage along with my friends and everything else waiting back home. I didn't do it and haven't changed my plans but dayammm am I tempted..

Just wondering if anyone else here has just chucked everything and made a big life change.

    for a girl? hmmm

I have chucked Rice U for a big life change after my freshman year.

I can't really help you unless you post a picture of her, though.

I'd probably chuck it all again for a Chinese girl. mark me down.

C'mon Sishir, you gotta sell her on the advantages of snuggling up in the face of those harsh Minnesota winters... forget Paradise!

damn, Sishir.. I would have gone for it.

Traveling in Sri Lanka is weird in that you see a few Porsche's and other luxury cars on the road. You never see them in any surrounding countries.

Some people I used to work with claim that their religious texts indicate that the Garden of Eden was in Sri Lanka.

I haven't been back since the tsunami. Did you go to Galle on the south? Have they recovered somewhat yet?

How often has this sort of experience happened to you, Sishir? Maybe never? Do you sometimes sit in an office, or in your mortgaged home and wonder what a deep romance in an exotic country might be like? Do you enjoy danger? There is danger on that island. Danger that you may fall in love. Who knows... you might even meet Arthur C. Clarke.

How old are you Sishir if I may ask? If you're still young, I'd say go for it, if it does not work out, you can start over again.

I hate for you to go through life with that nagging question...what if?

I did something similar when I was much much younger. It didn't work out but I didn't have any regrets.

Now I'm old with arthritic knees and a nagging wife but those precious memories will never fade!

Well, I decided not to finish my PH.d and move to New Zealand for a girl...but I was already married to that girl, so it wasn't all that wild and impetuous. If she looks like Vanessa Williams, you should have gone for the gusto. On your death bed you sure won't be thinking about how responsible you were...you'd think about hitting it with that hot girl in Sri Lanka!

Quite a few people think Sri Lanka is the Biblical Garden of Eden and there is a mountain there called Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) along with some small islands stretching from India that are called Adam's Footsteps. As a side note there is a large footprint like depression at the top of Adam's Peak that Christians attribute to Adam, Buddhist to Siddartha Buddha and Muslims to Mohammed.

I was in Galle and was in Sri Lanka to do follow up on tsunami projects that an organization I work with raised moeny for. Galle itself is in good shape. The historic fort was undamaged but the city behind it was hit hard. They've rebuilt and in Galle itself there are few signs of the tsunami. The same can't said for other parts and up and down the costs there are still several ruins and reminders of the tsunami.

To answer your questions I'm 37 now and have arthritic knees too, you must've missed my Judo threads.. I'm fortunate to look at least 10 years younger and am not married. I have a lot of what if things and actually have made some life changing decisions before when in my 20's for the most part they didn't work out and one led me to still living in Minnesota, jury still out on that one, so I think that has made me warier about dropping everything to go live in Sri Lanka. FYI it wasn't just this one girl as motivation since the place is beautiful.

Sorry no pictures. I met her at night at a beach front bar and left my camera back in the hotel and I left that town the next morning and didn't have a chance to go back and get a picture of her.

Yo Sishir, you're in Singapore now? When are you headed home? I've been AWOL from the board lately, sounds like you've had a nice long trip around Asia.. we could catch a Rox game if you're still keen BUT I have no idea how to do that around here, frankly :D

About the girl.. reminds me of the movie Before Sunrise, except you apparently failed to hit it :p Hope you at least got some contact information, especially if she looks anything like this:

Big life changes happen to all of us, all the time.. it's just a matter of how much forethought you want to put into them I guess. In your case, too sudden and too drastic - I doubt most of us would have (could have) done it either

Dude...grow some ballz and do it...You may never get the opportunity to do this again...

If I was in your position, I'd do it...I mean, you only live once and you have to seize the moment...

Eh, it's easy to tell someone else that they have no balls and they should have done it. I wonder how many people telling him this would have actually done it themselves if they were in the same situation.

When I was in college, 2 of my friends decided to go to Berkley College of Music in Boston. They wanted me to go with them but I chose to stay behind because I was IN LOVE with my girlfriend and she didn't want me to go. Now, one of those guys has toured with Britney Spears and the other guy has played in the American Idol band.

Moral of the story? Think with your brain, not your dick.

    My question is...

How does one manage to look 27 at 37..?

    Ned Flanders lifestyle?

Possibly a bad comparison... But, I'm 24 going into 25.. don't drink but once a YEAR, and no, not even to the "tipsy" point, didn't start 'till a year ago. Don't smoke, other than the occasional bowl.. have an incredibly young looking face, babyfaced I guess since I've been told with a very, I-knew-it attitude, that I look almost the same as I did when I was 4yrs old by a few girls.. Have long wavy hair which makes me look even younger.. and yet I can't get age guesses lower than 20.

And, when I was 20, couldn't get lower than 17.

Those are the musical "heights" you regret not reaching..??

Backing up Britney Spears and American Idol contestants? What low-ceiling accomplishments to envy.. :(
