Poll: Majority Palestinians See Israel's Elimination as Goal

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A majority of Palestinians believe the aim of their 20-month-old uprising should be to eliminate Israel and not just end Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip ( news - web sites), an opinion poll released Tuesday showed.

The survey also showed almost half of all respondents believed Palestinian President Yasser Arafat ( news - web sites) would win elections he has proposed holding early next year and that more than half wanted reforms of his Palestinian Authority ( news - web sites).

The poll by the Palestinian Jerusalem Media and Communication Center (JMCC) highlighted a radicalization of views as 20 months of Israeli-Palestinian violence worsens.

The JMCC interviewed 1,179 people in the West Bank and Gaza in late May and early June. The poll had a three percent margin of error.

Fifty-one percent of people surveyed said the end result of the uprising should be "liberating all of historic Palestine," referring to British-mandate Palestine, part of which was recognized as Israel in 1948.

Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 Middle East war and these territories have since been the focus of internationally sponsored peace negotiations for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Forty-three percent of respondents said the aim of the uprising was to end Israeli occupation and establish a state only in the West Bank and Gaza.

This compared with a poll taken in December in which 48 percent said the uprising's goal was to end the occupation compared with 44 percent who said the aim should be to eliminate Israel, the JMCC said.

    BROAD SUPPORT FOR UPRISING

The uprising continued to have broad support. Seventy-nine percent of people surveyed said they back the revolt in some way and 68 percent said they approved of suicide bombings against Israeli civilians, down slightly from 74 percent in December.

Fewer than half the respondents supported Arafat, despite Israeli attempts to isolate him by besieging his headquarters and restricting his movement.

Some 41 percent of people surveyed gave Arafat favorable marks, compared with 29 percent who said he was a bad leader.

Most of the people polled said Israeli raids had reduced their support for the Palestinian Authority and its security forces, and also dented their support for holding peace talks with Israel.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents said the Israeli raids had boosted their approval of the militant Islamic group Hamas, which opposes Israel's existence, and 66 percent said the army operations increased their backing for suicide bombings.

A large majority -- 58 percent -- said they supported domestic reform within the Palestinian Authority, and 42 percent said the best way to accomplish reform was through free democratic elections.

Arafat was expected to win elections by 48 percent of those surveyed.

Overall, 25 percent of Palestinians said they trusted Arafat more than any other politician, followed by 24 percent who said they trust no one and nine percent who put their faith in Hamas' spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

Consider this poll and Arafat's speech in which he threatened a "huge explosion" if Jerusalem weren't the capital of a new Palestinian state, and you see we have a major problem.

The Palestinians aren't being very forthcoming about their true goals. The international community should step in now and declare Jerusalem an international city for all people who are Muslim, Jewish, and Christian. The killing will never stop until this issue is resolved.

I think each religion should be given control of it's most holy site.
    Islam => Mecca
    Judaism => Jerusalem
    Christianity => Bethlahem
    etc.

LOL, since the Israelis live in Palestine, I doubt your claim.

By the way, there has never been a country named Palestine, and the "Palestinians" are Arabs.

I think you have picked sides in a conflict that you know little about.:)

Not if Palestinians insist on "all or nothing". If they do, they will be the ones that end up with nothing (one way or another).

The Smith Institute Poll from 3 years ago found that 55% of Israelis felt that a Palestinian State was inevitable, and they would support it.

Some don't want to admit a simple truth- the majority of the Israeli people want a peacful resolution that includes a Palestinian state while a majority of Palestinians want the destruction of Israel.

I blame the Palestinian Authority for this situation. They have manipulated their media and schools, and lied to their people to foment this hatred.

When we 1,250,000,000 Muslims get our act together it will be Israel that will cease to exist. I dont hate Jews, but I do hate Israel. What I'm predicting might not happen even this century, but it will happen one day.

All I hear on television is how suicide bombers are killing innocents. What about the ****ing Israeli settlers who are shooting little kids for fun as well. What about those ****ing Israeli soldiers who are shooting innocent Palestinian civilians?

    **** Israel!

    Thanks, Emperor Palpatine!!!

"You wil find it is you who is mistaken...about a great many things."

Hmmm...I thought all of this wasn't supposed to be a holy war? Not when "Arabs" or "Palestinians" get their act together...but when Muslims do, huh?

Neither side is totally right or totally wrong here....but I will never, ever, never defend suicide bombers. I have seen very little to indicate that Israeli soldiers are shooting Palestinian kids "for fun" as you claim.

The Israelis are among the finest fighting forces in the world...because they have to be. I don't think they're going anywhere soon. And good luck on that whole "get our act together" thing. Until ideas like democracy are adopted and ideas like theocracy are abandoned, I don't see this happening. And if the United States turns to alternative fuel sources...well...good luck.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen you post Rockets03. Why don't you tell us how you really feel?

It's sad that a lot of muslims are buying what their press and leaders are telling them, when it is 99% propaganda designed to foment hatred.

You want to talk about little kids dying? Talk to the palestinian *leadership* that inspires young kids, teenagers, and adults to become suicide bombers. They are as guilty of murder as anyone in this conflict.

The reason this conflict exists is because some people want Israel to disappear off of the map and Israel refuses to do so. I will accept what you say, that this is your desire and it is reasonable. However, what is an acceptable cost to you? Hundreds of palestinians dead? Thousands? Tens of thousands? Oh wait, Israel has the bomb....millions?

Yasser Arafat, and other leaders like him have accepted numbers like this as reasonable costs to achieve their goals. That makes them mass murderers. Don't belive me? Ask yourself how many more Palestinians have died since the stakes have been raised lately.

You can blame Israel if you like...but no more than you can blame a rat that you have backed into a corner for scratching or biting you.

I agree. Why don't you get over there and blow somebody up Rockets03 if that's how you feel? Martyrdom awaits you. You will be in eternal paradise with Allah....can't get much better than that.

I'm glad you don't want to kill anybody. What is your position on what Rocket03 said?

Considering that Israel is bordered by the ocean on one side, and surrounded on the other sides by countries that would rather (to varying degrees) that it didn't exist, I think "cornered rat", if uncomplimentary, is a valid comparison. It can hurt it's opponents, but can't destroy them. The only improvement for Israel lately is that it has gained India as an ally, so they aren't alone in the region.

Thanks, but no thanks. I have no sympathy for those suicide bombers. I dont think they are going to go to heaven by killing innocent civilians either.

Do I want there to be peace? Yes
Do I want Israel to cease to exist? No
Is Israel completely in the right? No
Are the Palestinians completely in the right? No

Has Israel actually done anything about the illegal settlements? I dont think so. There are actually new ones popping up every day. Some towns over there have 95% Palestinians and 5% Isralelis. In this same towns curfew is placed upon the Muslims while the Israelis are free to walk about as they please.

Muslims are being oppressed there, and I am a Muslim. How would you feel like if someone was able to run you out of your house just because you are a Muslim and they are a Jew.

Both sides are wrong. Palestinians could gain international sympathy if they stop doing those freakin sucided bombings. The Israeli government is also never going to make a true Palestinian state. They always talk about it, but the opposing parties and Sharons own party dont really want it to happen anyways.

Arafat is a terrorist, but that ****ing Sharon is the second coming of Moses?

If both sides are wrong and I have to side with someone, it will be the Palestinians.

Thanks for clarifying Rockets03. I was going to say the same thing - they could further their cause a lot more with passive resistance.

I agree with about 90% of what you posted there and the rest isn't worth arguing about.

    Peace to all Rockets fans!

You are living in a fantasy world.

Meanwhile, back in the real world of international law, civilized people have decided that Israel is a valid country with a right to exist. Once the violence stops, all parties will agree on the final bounderies of Israel and the new Palestinian nation.

I wonder when people like you will finally understand the realities of this situation?

Not only does Israel have the support of the United States, but they probably have over 100 nuclear bombs with advanced guidence systems. Israel can field 19 division of troops (the U.S. can field 15). Israel can fly 3000 combat sorties a day (the U.S. can fly 1500). Israel is a MAJOR technological powerhouse, exporting software around the world.

In short, the Muslim world will NEVER be able "make Israel disappear" without saying BYE BYE to Mecca, Medina, Damascus, Cairo, Alexandria, Baghdad, etc.

It is time Rockets03, and the people who share his violent opinions, to understand that Israel is here to stay- forever.

Peace is the only viable option.
