Just heard the report on CNN; awaiting info myself, but it sounds like it's going to really p*ss me off.
Yeah, it was pretty bad. I had it on the background, so I didn't get all the details, but apparently teachers were saying those for the war and fighting in the war were unethical. Sounded pretty sick.
<a HREF="http://www.washtimes.com/national/20030227-8550156.htm">Children of Maine Guard unit taunted by teachers</a>
WABI- TV Bangor Maine | February 21, 2003 | 6 PM News Alan Grover, WABI-TV: "What the kids are facing is hearing that [from Principals, Teachers and/or Guidance Counsellors] their mother or father is a bad person for taking part in the confrontation with Iraq; comments that are coming from teachers. That's according to officers with the Guard’s Family Assistance Program who've been traveling throughout the state this week. The officers report that such incidents are relatively few in number but that they've occurred in practically every region of the state." Major Andrew Gibson: "Some kids have even reported that... ah... teachers have said things to them, specifically, about the ah unethical nature of their parent going off to fight." LTC John Mosher: "Soldiers follow our instructions to coordinate with schools to let them know they will be leaving, that their child should be monitored and to keep an eye on 'em." Most of the children involved are 7 to 9 years of age. These teachers were told what was happening. Their response? Not help, but exploitation of the opportunity to single out and hurt a small child in a vulnerable state. What assholes.
There are some places where disecting the ethics of the potential war with Iraq are not appropriate. Teachers should know better than to discuss such a hot-button topic (even if the students are the ones who initiate the discussion), let alone suggest that the parents of these kids are "unethical." I'm pretty skeptical of the war myself, but I'm able to recognize that soldiers are just doing their job. Thus, their ethics play no real part in a discussion of the potential war. Maybe the teachers needs a lesson in how the military works.
Wow. You all know more or less how I feel about the possible conflict in Iraq, but this is the most ignorant and counter-productive thing I've heard yet. The 2nd-to-last people a pacifist should target are the soldiers. The last people a pacifist should target are children. Revolting.
I didn't think there were actually still people in the U.S. who look down on the soldiers for doing what's asked. I assumed that died after Vietnam.
Traumatizing the 7 year old children of our soldiers. There should be some job openings in Maine tomorrow morning.
I sincerely hope these "educators" are fired ASAP. Maybe instead of a final paycheck we can send them straight over to Iraq t b ehuman shields. What a bunch of f-in cowards. Picking on kids.
This is very bad. For those of you too young to remember Vietnam, this is what happens when you have close to 50-50 split in the country on going to war. It's is very possible that in Maine there is an actual majority against the war. The people doing this are probably misguided religiously fervent Catholics, Methodists, Episcopalians . People in the South forget that most of the major non evangelical religions have spoken out against this war at this time on a moral basis all the way to the top, the Pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Head of the Methodist Church (I believe, certainly the Church's positon). Fortuanately, with 30 cases out of 10's of thousands it might not be that widespread.
this is so typical of you glynch...somebody did something wrong? or it was probably those damn methodists again. an atheist or an agnostic would NEVER do this to children. only those mean Jesus freaks! here we go...again.
What kind of a low-class individual would insult someone who's voluntarily defending our country? I'm anti-war, and even I thin that bi*ch should be used as a human battle shield.
OUTRAGEOUS !!! Teachers need to worry about teaching the basics, and keep their nose out of politics. It is not their job to teach beliefs.... Nope, that is for the COLLEGE teachers, but by then the students have the ability to think for themselves. If my kid was going to this school, I would be on the doorstep of the principals office the very next day....and we would talk about keeping noses where they belong. DD
100% of this country is anti war. If you are talking about supporting the decisions of the president vs. not supporting the president then the 50-50 number pulled from you pulled from your arse is nonsensical. The numbers I have seen are closer to 65 or 70 percent of the people in this country support Pesident Bush. You need to back up thuis bit, specifically about the Methodist church, MY methodist church, the one where sunday my pastor asked us for prayers for the soldiers facing troubling times & for courage for our president. Yeah, and fortunately there are only hundreds of rapes each day instead of more.
