    Karl Malone's Decision Due Soon

    By JOHN NADEL
LOS ANGELES (AP) - If Karl Malone decides to play again, it probably will be for the San Antonio Spurs, his agent said Monday.

Malone will make an announcement about his future before the All-Star break. The All-Star game is Feb. 20 in Denver.

"If he would choose to play, the likeliest candidate would be the Spurs, which is a team he almost played for a year and a half ago," Dwight Manley said. "He's already basically retired because he's not playing. That would be a big step for him, to essentially come out of quasi-retirement and play.

"There are two possibilities. He's leaned toward staying where he already is. Where he goes forward, only he knows. He'll say that real soon. I'm not in the job of speculating. It's out of my hands. It's going to be what it's going to be."

Manley said that Malone, who underwent knee surgery last summer, is healthy and works out every day, but has not been playing basketball.

The 41-year-old Malone is the second-leading scorer in NBA history, 1,459 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Malone played 18 seasons for Utah before joining the Lakers for the 2003-2004 season at a greatly reduced salary, saying he wanted to win a championship before retirement.

He missed 39 games last season after injuring his right knee, and was hurt again during the playoffs, missing the last three games of the NBA Finals, all of which the Lakers lost to the Detroit Pistons.

Malone opted out of his $1.65 million contract following last season, making him a free agent. He and his family live in nearby Newport Beach.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said last Thursday he hadn't spoken with Malone since the Christmas holidays, but made it clear the Spurs were interested in his services.

"He's got to decide if he wants to play, if the juice is there," Popovich said before the Spurs beat the Los Angeles Lakers 103-91.

"He's somebody we've been interested in for a couple of years. He's a leader - he's got the whole package. I thought he did a great job in the playoffs last year."

Malone was a key factor in the Lakers' victories over the Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals and the Minnesota Timberwolves in the conference finals.

Manley said in October that his client wasn't ready to play, but if he returned, it would only be with the Lakers.

That changed late last year after Malone was accused by Kobe Bryant of making a pass at his wife. Malone, through Manley, denied the accusation and apologized to Bryant and his wife for any remarks she might have considered inappropriate.

Wonderful! I really wish Karl Malone the best! The greatest power forward ever! I hope he joins San Antonio or Miami, Miami would be better because he's already ahd experience playing with Shaq and there will be more of a role for him, unless TD plays Center.

He is debating whether the Spurs or Heat has better chance to give him a ring! I bet he would love to get his name on both rosters without having to play a game.

hahaha new rox you're right.. Why doesnt he ask former champions in financial trouble to sell him a championship ring?

wouldnt it be funny if he ended up playing for the Spurs and then we knock them out of the playoffs?!?

Karl Malone will never, ever, ever win a NBA Championship. His bad mojo somehow managed to kill a sure thing last year with 4 hall of famers on the Lakers (5, counting the coach). I feel sorry for whatever team picks him up.

Even if he joins the Spurs and they win a championship, he'll always be known as someone never good enough to lead his team to a championship, just like David Robinson.

I'll tell ya what I'd like to see.

After so much time away from playing, the 41-year-old Malone can't get up and down the court any more and loses his shooting touch. Result: Spurs won't take him. Heat won't take him. No contenders will take him.

I'd love to see that. I'm a Malone-hater. I wouldn't pee on him if his hair was on fire.

oh yeah - no hair. Guess that rogaine stuff didn't work out, eh Karl?

I'd rank Duncan ahead of Malone all time already. In a fraction of the time, he has won more than Malone could ever dream of. Duncan doesn't even play with Stockton.

NewRoxFan, my thoughts exactly, I mean I was thinking the very same thing. Just buy a ring. How pathetic is that. I mean, what are they going to wheel him out on the court in the seventh game of the finals so he can get a ring. Really sad. I would be embarassed to be so obvious.

Signing with the spurs is sad, but to wait after 50 games have gone by in the season is even worse. At least pick a team from the beginning and try to claim you had something to do with their success. This is just shameless at this point in the season.

lmao. what a clown, hopping on with whatever team gets him a ring. unless he plays an absolute integral role in winning a championship wouldn't it seem kind of hollow even to him? well maybe not, but either way it's not like tagging along for a ring is gonna bring him the champion label i think he desperately wants.

Not to defend him, but I think he is recovering from surgery.

That said, he'll never win a championship.
