How is this even a contest? I'm talking bout the private dick who's the sex machine to all the chicks..
The thread and poll are meaningless without Jim Rockford being in it!!!... <iframe width="854" height="510" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tO0Vq4fj3ho" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> RIP Mr. James Garner. ....... ....... .......
Is that to attract cows? ;-)- Seriously, I'm another cat who would vote for The Rockford Files were it listed in the public poll (kudos!), the only polls I vote in, unless Clutch starts the thing.
Magnum PI and it aint close. War hero..... drives a ferrari.... lives in a mansion in Hawaii..... laid back with killer stach..... good looking.... great friends and lots of casual sex. vs. Angry black man Advantage: Magnum
Some people just have a nack for taking anything, including a fun and trivial topic like this one, and turning it into a reason to just want to shake your head and walk away.
I'm really surprised that Magnum PI is tied with Shaft. Magnum PI just seems so dated to the early 80's. While Shaft is a very much a product of the early 70's the gritty anti-hero that he portrays is still popular today. As the song goes he's a complicated man. Magnum PI in comparison seems almost silly. It's like how the Sean Connery James Bond has more influence on the Daniel Craig James Bond than the Roger Moore one.
Consider too that there is a reason why there is a Shaft remake and there hasn't been a Magnum PI remake. Heck. CBS remade Hawaii 5-0 before they've come close to redoing Magnum PI.
They haven't found the right stach yet. So far he come the closest... Spoiler ....... ....... .......
No way. Magnum PI is a far more believable character... only James Rockford eclipses him. Magnum was very human, got his butt kicked, messed up with the ladies and was very introspective. There hasn't been a remake of Magnum PI because it was very much writer driven, and it isn't an easy show to emulate. A better comparison? SHAFT or KOJACK?....
The reason there has been not been a Magnum PI remake is because you don't mess with perfection. In my opinion one of the greatest tv theme songs.
They were probably both prototypes for modern action genres and characters: lone wolfs in mildly exotic settings (from the perspective of middle-class viewers), who rebelled against corrupt authority figures and were serial romancers. Also, however much more iconic Shaft seems to be, blaxpoitation flicks were notoriously bad and one-dimensional. They seem more meaningful in retrospect because no-one was incorporating the black urban experience into crime films.
