Hahaha, great synopsis. That's a pretty odd thing for the President of the team to just come out and say, but I guess reality is reality.

Well, why not swing for the fences. Can't take the money with you once you're dead anyway.

He might be thinking about a guy like Trevor Ariza, but NBA GM's are thinking about a guy like Sasha Vujacic. Sasha got a 3 year, $15 million contract when the economy was doing great and the Lakers were short on big contracts. Redick is a tweener who has some pretty pathetic stats being inflated by his skin color and the "white man's work ethic" stigma alot of people have. I get that he works hard, that he's improved, that he had a great college career etc... but he's still a perennial scrub. Just doesn't have the skillset or size.

Trevor Ariza didn't get a "nice contract". We actually got him at a discount, other teams like the Cavs were willing to pay him more than the 5 mill mid-level. In fact if you think about it a solid defender with Ariza's hops and somewhat serviceable scoring ability is well worth 5 mill, esp. considering his age (only 24).

Reddick should compare himself to Jason Kapono instead. Not only do they have the same color and one-dimensional shooting ability, Kapono got his (way overpaid) 5 mill contract by doing damage in the playoffs during the Heat's championship run.

Redick looked like a bust. He's overcome that DWI, that NBA rookie year, beefed up big-time. More impressive to me than his shooting: I saw Kobe try to take him three straight possessions, and Redick stopped him each time. All Mamba could do was smile at that. He's no tweener. He's turned himself into a solid two.

yea van gundy wouldn't play him for years until he improved his defense, he has his athletic limits, but for defense he still really has become a smart and atleast serviceable defender, and if you actually watch teh magic play, he just has great awareness, eh doesnt just try to shoot every shot, hell make the right play and more importantly with playing with dwight or a big, he spaces the court and knows where to be which opens up the court for others...he just needs to find the right opportunity and offense for him and he can be solid, i think utah would be good for him pairing him with deron williams and a coach who can work him like jeff hornacek

Even if discounted, Ariza did get a nice contract because of the good circumstance he was in. I agree with Redick there. If Ariza didnt have the NBA Finals showcase, Ariza would have made even less money.

get it right, we're paying him closer to 7mil/year when you avg it out. we overpaid for ariza and now we're stuck with a poor player, relative to his contract, for a long time.

    Give me a break.

Redick is a solid defender despite his athletic limitations, and he got an average of 22 minutes per game in every single game this season for a championship contender and arguably the deepest team in the league.

I'll take a "perennial scrub" that's going to shoot .405 from 3, score 10 points, and have an assist to turnover ratio of 2:1, any day of the week.

I'm sure Redick will be like all his other Duke alumni and find some GM to overpay him this summer. Off the top of my head:

    Battier (7M)
    Boozer (~15M)
    Brand (~16M)
    Deng (~12M)
    Duhon (5M)
    Dunleavy (~10M)
    Dahntay Jones (~3M)
    Maggette (~9M)

Josh McRoberts, Shelden Williams, Shavlik Randolph: Still cashing NBA checks when there's no earthly reason they should be.

See, going to a good school really does make you more money than you deserve! If that ain't a good recruiting pitch then I dunno what is.

Yes, because 5 years later when he's 29 Trevor Ariza will be the exact same player and won't have progressed a single bit from now

Averaging the contract out makes sense if the player has already peaked, but considering Ariza's age and potential for improvement would offset the increase in his contract over the years. FYI Shane Battier is making this much this year as well.

Maggette's a ball hog and for 9 mill I'd expect a 2nd tier or upper 3rd tier player already. Chris Duhon has fallen off the map and doesn't even deserve 3 mill now.

Are you serious? Have you even watched him play this year?
Redick is the fittest player on the Magic team, and is actually a good defender. The magic use him to guard PG's and high scoring SG's who are 6'5 and under.
And he doesn't have the skillset?
Please. This guy can score from anywhere.
