I believe 12 is a magic number for us, because that would put us at exactly 50 wins. I doubt a 50 win team would miss the playoffs, it has never happened before in the NBA.

Basically, if we go 12-12 the rest of the way we are at least 6th seeded team.

    Can anyone confirm this?

With the "race" so tight, I'd like to have a mathematician calculate this if possible.

Man I hope the Rockets make the playoffs and shut all the experts up. The game on Sunday will be a huge game and I hope the TC is rocking.

After watching Denver almost lose tonight all I can say is the Rockets are going to carve the Nuggets Defense apart like nobody's business.

Magic Number *24* as in 24 games left that we will win this year? This isn't the time to be realistic, we still got the streak goin!

I would love the same type of effort and energy on Sunday that they came out with tonight. I know this was the Grizz, but Denver's defense is not much better than the Grizz's defense.

I hope Houston plays the suffocating defense on Denver to choke the life out of their offense. I love Houston's in-your-face defense. Even T-Mac brought it tonight on defense! :D

We still have 13 games to play agasint good teams the rest of the regular season. If we can pull off 5 of them, we are in the playoffs.

given our remaining schedule, 12-12 or within that ballpark is pretty much what i expect. (man, it could be 18-6 or better if yao is still playing, oh well...)

say we're #6 or #7 after 82. the crazy thing is you don't know who you'd face in rd1. it goes back to the matchups. but i've had a hunch mcgrady will finally be playing in rd2 this year. and that should be good news for everyone.

Well, I'm no mathematician, but I'll give it a shot.

Supposing that Golden State were not to lose the rest of the season, that would put them at 60-22. Which would mean that the Rockets would have to finish at 61-21 to guarantee a playoff spot, or go 23-1 the rest of the way.

So wouldn't that make our magic number 23?

does that mean each time gsw loses we also subtract 1 from 23?

I think you'd have to take into consideration whether or not the Rockets play GS head-to-head again (do they?) and also, what if other teams fall off?

When Dirk or Duncan blow out their knees or ankles in a few days, how far will they fall out of the race for the top?

All the contenders would have to be playing each other somewhere in there, so some other teams are going to lose in there somewhere...

I'd say if GS won out, they'd be maybe the 1 or 2 seed... because they'd beat somebody head-to-head. Just a hunch, but it looks plausible at 60 wins...

I wonder how many teams we are facing, that are currently in the playoffs, between now and the end of the regular season?

That has to figure in for every team, ahead or behind Houston.

I think we are a little far away from being able to figure it... but maybe someone can help make it more clear already.

I'm pretty sure either a Houston win or GS loss would subtract 1 from that number.

Magic number is 22, I think. Total number of games left, plus one, minus the games you are ahead in the loss column of the team you are calculating against.

Or is is 0.5 for either... and 1 for a Rockets win + GS loss, and then 2 for a head-to-head?

Say Houston is on an off night, but GS loses, that would equal -0.5 right? Or +0.5 if they won?

    Rockets are 38-20, GS 35-22. 24+1=25. 25-2=23.

yeah, but the competition has never been this tight either.
Denver and Golden State are within 3 games behind the rockets, so if they catch up that 3 games, then rockets is out. I think 15-9 is definitely a possiblilty.

I'm pretty sure it's 1. Supposing the number is in fact 23...

    HOU - 38-20
    GSW - 35-22

Say Houston wins 12 straight, GSW loses 12 straight.

    HOU - 50-20
    GSW - 35-34

If after that we lose out the rest of the way and GS wins out, that puts the records at

    HOU - 50-32
    GSW - 48-34

So yeah. -1 for a Houston win or GS loss.

I'm pretty sure if GS won 60+ games this season then there would be some team that would fall below them... in other words, our playoff chances don't live and die with the warriors. You have to include the other teams in this, especially with the west being so close..

Our magic number is not 12, the OP is just saying he thinks 12 wins is enough to get us in. I think it's a bit early to be starting magic number threads.
