July 17, 2001, 7:34PM NBA stars to play two exhibition games in Far East Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) -- Gary Payton, Ray Allen and Shareef Abdur-Rahim will be among a group of NBA players who will travel to China and Taiwan in September for two exhibition games against local players. Wang Zhizhi of the Dallas Mavericks and 7-foot-6 center Yao Ming of the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association will play in the first exhibition game, Sept. 16 at Shanghai Stadium, the NBA said Tuesday. The second game is Sept. 19 at National Taiwan University Multiple Stadium in Taipei. "With the eyes of the sporting world looking to Asia, we are pleased to showcase our game and build valuable partnerships which will help develop a foundation for a promising future," said Sam Strang, the NBA's vice president for global marketing partnerships. Other NBA players who will participate include Todd MacCulloch of Philadelphia, Corey Maggette of the Los Angeles Clippers, Cliff Robinson of Detroit, Damon Stoudamire of Portland and Robert Traylor of Cleveland. ------------------
They don't always pick the best players, they pick the players a) that want to go, b) that they feel best represent the image the NBA wants to portray, c) that are allowed by their teams to go. Not all players want to tire themselves out by going halfway across the world and working against competition from other nations in exhibitions when the NBA season means a lot more. ------------------

I have a proposal for these stupid selections of the Dream team and goodwill games...why don't you make these participants try out and make it open to everyone including the college guys and let non-NBA coaches coach them...this will filter out lazy NBA stars and will be replace of guys who gives their hearts out to play these games... yes, make these stars try out too if they want it that bad...why not? ------------------

right on! playing for/representing your country should be a honour, not something you do begrudgingly! Most country teams have people fighting to get onto them, and treat it correctly. Steve Nash wanted to change his Dallas number to be the same # that he uses for Canada, not the other way around. This is how it is/appears for players from all the countries in the world, except for the US (with a few very notable soccer/football exclusions for qualifiers/friendly games.
