Personally, I am not disappointed at all Texas misses another BCS game. a) I think we would get beat up bad by Michigan or USC, b) no team that gives up 60 in one game and around 150 over deserve to, & c) it is less likely we fool overselves that Texas is on the right track If ever it was obvious Mack Brown needs fresh blood it is this year. College football is a game of innovation. You need to bring in new people to learn new things, not rely on loyalty in in house hires. Texas should raid KSU, OU, LSU & USC staffs. If you see how well those teams are coached you know guys from those staffs would bring some new knowledge and innovations to the table. Other options may be out there, how about the DC or OC at Boise, Hawaii, TCU, Oregon, Miami (OH). How about mid-level guys in the pro ranks--Ricky Hunley as a DC would be intriguing. It sum it is time for Mack to make changes and he must move out of his comfort zone. I know many of you guys are high on Akina, but isn't he learning from most of the same guys? You got to go outside and take some risks, even if Mack isn't 100% sure he will be "comfortable" with those guys. That is the only way UT will be among the best and most prepared teams in the land--instead of just being one of the most talented.
I never understood why people regarded Akina so highly. I don't think Vasher has really improved as a cover guy since moving to CB.
Yes!!! That is the spirit. That is a much better approach than "That guy bleeds orange (once played or coached for Texas) so he must be good".
You're dreaming. It's not going to happen under Mack. I just hope we can keep McWhorter. Haywood was a good pick up. I think everyone likes Akina because he gets intense and all that BS. Vasher is overrated and our secondary is pretty bad. Fundamentally and style of play. Akina turned down the UCLA DC job to stay an assistant? I doubt it. He'll probably be our next DC. Davis is not going anywhere. Getting the guy from Boise State would be insane. We'd be so scary, but it's just a dream. Davis will stay and you'll hear references to our top offensive stats BS. Being a top 10 team is great, but Texas is still underachieving and we should expect more. But I don't anymore because we're going to remain "mediocre" among elite teams even with the financial resources, facilities, fanbase, recruiting area, etc.
I kind of figured there was some sarcasm there. But truth be, told, Texas has a history of making really bad coaching selections based on "loyalty" and "he bleeds orange" inside of being open to the best guy. New ideas and new approaches are needed, not just more intensity (Akina). We could even keep Akina and Davis (but not Reese), but offer some bigger bucks to LB, DL, RB, WR, QB coaches from seminally organized teams (LSU, OU, OSU, USC) or try some flyers (Boise, Hawaii, etc). Got to go outside the system and bring some innovation. Call Akina Co-DC and pair him with a young gun who a mid-level assistant from OSU for instance.
