Chris Walsh is a friend of mine and a helluva boxer. Not too good of a golfer however. Hopefully he will get some better fights with this win over Camacho. Flipping the script By MIKE POTTER : The Herald-Sun mpotter@heraldsun.com Apr 19, 2003 : 12:39 am ET RALEIGH -- "Irish" Chris Walsh came into the RBC Center on Friday night and tore up the script. The slightly known middleweight from Scranton, Pa., bleeding profusely after a pair of accidental head butts, took a unanimous decision from the legendary nine-time world champion Hector "Macho" Camacho when the scheduled 10-round middleweight bout was stopped for medical reasons after six rounds. It was a popular decision as the 28-year-old won over the ostensibly neutral crowd, bowing to every section of the arena before the decision was announced. "I told you I wasn’t going out there for 10 rounds of posing," said Walsh, who improved to 19-6 while the 40-year-old Camacho — who was unavailable for comment after the bout — fell to 76-5. "Every time I hurt him he hit me with his head. "My referee [Bill Clancy of Pittsboro] was true to his word. He said he didn’t have any interest in this fight and all he wanted was a clean fight. ... I might have ended [Camacho’s] career tonight. He was a great fighter, but I firmly believed that his time was up." Walsh said that he had been expecting to fight the Puerto Rican star twice before in Miami and then Chicago, and didn’t start training for Friday’s contest in earnest until three weeks ago. Asked if he’d like to fight again in Raleigh, Walsh, who wore green and white trunks that were a bloody mess after the bout, said, "Hell, yeah! This is a tremendous place to fight." Walsh said he would give Camacho a rematch if he wants one, but series promoter Chuck Lanier said he’s hoping to set up a match between Walsh and Durham’s Carlton Holland. Holland vs. Camacho had been billed as Friday’s headliner when the card was first announced. The head butts were NOT accidental, as the article stated.
