I just want to let you know that you folks in Texas don't know how great you have it. There are plenty of better bar-b-que joints. But for a chain Luthers makes great food. I've lived in NY and now LA and because of various laws about smoking meat, or something like that it is very hard if not impossible to get bar-b-que other than chicken and ribs. None of it is as good as the stuff in Texas even a chain like Luthers, and it is all more expensive. People are really lucky to be in an unfamiliar part of town, and still be able to Luthers and get decent if not good bar-b-que for a good price. While growing up in Houston I ate at Luthers once in a while but only now am I realizing I never gave it the credit it is due. I just want all the Texans to appreciate what they have.
Yeah I used to eat Luther's almost every Saturday afternoon when I was in college. The south Main location down by the dome. I prefer Goode Company but Luther's works also.
I've been in North Carolina since 1975. The BBQ here is different-- very different. Edible but forgettable. Somewhere around 1981 or so someone opened a Luther's here. Let's say I was one happy dude. If anyone had been tracking, I would have been recognized as an investor. Damn but the place didn't make it to its second year....
exactly. the bbq over there in joe-ja in nc is mostly pork. i remember pulled pork being popular over there. that's one thing that i missed about texas when i moved there.
i've never eaten at luther's or if i have i don't remember it. funny thing is there's one less than 2 minutes away. i don't mind driving a little further to goode's and having the good ****.
I heard Luther's boils their ribs (gasp)...the blasphemy. slizzard....me too...there have been numerous family functions so far this summer...adn since Im recognized as the best on the pit by both sides of the family....guess who gets tapped to do it? just did many racks of ribs, fajitas, whole chickens, and sausage yesterday. briskets two weeks ago and its funny...Ive been in Texas almost 40 years...and I have never been to Luthers. Glyde, smoke is basically full of particulate matter from the burning, and as such violates the anti-pollution laws of Cali..dont know why NY would do that also....but probably for the same reason.
I did eat Good Company once, but at the time I didn't know it was a chain. I don't remember the price though. I know Luther's is pretty reasonable and it has a drive thru. Real BBQ is such a luxury to me now, I can't imagine having a chain with a drive-thru and reasonable prices so close. I can't wait for my next trip to Houston.
