I do not post on here very often and due to being restricted at work I don't get a chance to read this board very often so please don't bash me too hard if this has been discussed a million times before. I have heard conflicting reports and would like to know the truth on the lottery pick. If we unfortunately don't make the playoffs and end up getting really lucky with a top three pick in the upcoming lottery is it protected or not? I have heard it is not but I thought that all top three picks are protected regardless. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to let me know the truth and sorry if this is the wrong thread for this topic.

nope, no picks are protected unless it is stipulated in the trade. Our draft pick is protected next year. The funny thing is the grizzlies owe their pick to detroit. So Detroit has about the same chance of getting Lebron as we did at getting Yao. Isn't that sick?

    Rockbox,

Thank for the info, but your post confused me a little it says our pick is protected so if we get a top three pick it is ours?

My understanding: Our pick is in not protected. If we don't make the playoffs, and by some miraculous stroke of luck get the top pick (don't hold your breath), then Memphis still has that pick. I'm not 100% on that, but I've been told that before.

My understanding of Detroit: They have Memphis' top pick unless it is #1.

You're right Clutch. I just checked on nbadraft.net. So I guess the Pistons are hoping that memphis gets the number 2 pick. That is still sick considering they are the best team in the East.

According to realgm.com, the pick we have to send to Memphis this year is unprotected, but it doesn't have to be ours. It either has to be ours or in the top 13.

If what realgm.com says is accurate, and for some reason we didn't make the playoffs, and were lucky enough to get the top one or two ping pong balls, we would certainly trade down to get a later pick, and gain something in the process. We will not be giving Memphis James or Millicik this year or any other top ten lottery pick.

1st round pick to Memphis. Can be Houston's pick or another teams' pick that is in the top-13. Houston's option. Due in '03. No protection.

(August 27, 1999: Rockets trade G Michael Dickerson, F Othella Harrington, G Brent Price, F Antoine Carr and a future first-round draft choice to Vancouver Grizzlies for rights to G Steve Francis. Rockets also receive F Don MacLean and a future first-round draft choice from Orlando Magic, and the Magic received F Michael Smith, G Roderick Rodes, G Lee Mayberry and F Makhtar N'Diaye from Grizzlies)

Yes if the rockets won the James sweepstakes they would trade Cato, Nachbar, and a future first round pick for the 13th pick in the draft, and they would draft James and make him our small forward next year and let Collier back up a bigger, better enduranced Yao.

My understanding was that the Rox have one protection with the pick -- they have to give the Grizz this pick or one within three places of it.

If that is true, then trade scenarios scream out if the Rox get the #1 or #2 pick. However, they are destined for @#15, right?

And the Grizzlies are hoping they get number 1 with their pick and number 2 with ours.

Dang straight xiki, Rox won't be in the lottery this year!!!!!

I ran "Lebron" lottery 22 times and on the 22nd time, Memphis used the Rockets pick which happened to be third to take Bosh.

We used all our luck up last year. Don't count on a repeat. Any miracle we had left was used up last night in beating the Clips. So did anyone else see Rice slip the ref that wad of cash after the game????
