Wow. One minute you're introing a old dude the next you're resigning, think he'll move to Harlem now?
I bet that the Dems are pissed to h*ll about Lott's resignation. They could have gotten a lot of mileage over the Republican Senate leader's comments, next election cycle. Oh well, the Dems at least still have Ashcroft.
Here's to Lott. How was the guy supposed to know that his colleagues would suddenly admonish him for being a racist after all of these decades? Damn, give a guy a warning why don't ya. Or at least tell him that the Republicans are trying to powder puff their ideology nowadays. Sheez.
He almost Clayton Williams-ed himself completely out of office. You'd think a career politician like himself would know better. At the same time, Republicans couldn't spit on the sidewalk without someone crying foul.
You wish this were the truth, but Middle America doesn't believe the Lie. The Republican Party's true ideology centers around personal freedom and inclusion. Lott deserves credit for putting his country and his party ahead of himself. Politicians that drag out scandals without regard for their constituants are truly disgusting (anybody come to mind?). I am glad this is over. Frist or McConnell will do a great job as majority leader, and Democrats will have to find a new target to villify.
*thumps Timing in the chest instead of getting into an endless debate which will never be finished in one morning, and then runs away for more coffee before Timing can retort with another drawn out one liner*
The question was asked but I am not sure if it was answered. He is only stepping down as Senate Leader.
Achebe, you nailed that one. It should be interesting to see how the Republicans keep their coalition of the wealthy and the Christian right, many of whom are not particularly racist, with those racists who vote Republican because they are seen as the party of segregation and racism. What code words will the GOP use to appeal to racists while still pretending to be a party that values "inclusion?" Will opposition to affirmative action and quotas and some other buzz words be enough to hold the racists attention? Will they have to run more Willie Horton crime adds with menacing African American actors?
Lott deserves credit for putting his country and his party ahead of himself. Politicians that drag out scandals without regard for their constituants are truly disgusting (anybody come to mind?). Definitely. Lott, as soon as this scandal started, realized he needed to step down. Well, except for those 5 or 6 different types of apologies every few days, and a failed attempt to get some brownie points by appearing on BET. After everything else failed, everyone in the party was turning on him, and he was going to be kicked out anyway, he acted very quickly! He deserves credit for that. The Republican Party's true ideology centers around personal freedom and inclusion. Except when Ashcroft decides otherwise.
Did you hear what Andy Card said when he was asked if Bush was for affirmative action like Trent Lott suddenly is? Card said that Bush was for affirmative access and then completely lied about the success of the 10% rule in Texas. More made up lingo from the Bush operation. Tax relief, death tax, and affirmative access. It's too funny.
