Well I went to the doctor and they did the routine check of all body information. I was shocked to learn that my weight had ballooned to 230. I am 5'10' and realize this is an unhealthy weight to have. Add to the fact that I am slowly approaching 30 (26) and I know that the older you get the harder it is to lose. My doctor visit wasn't about that at all but after hearing and seeing that number I became concerned. I want to lose about 50 lbs and I would love to do it by April of next year. My question is, is that possible using healthy and not extreme measures? What kind of exercise/diet tips can you guys give me? I know a few things I already need to cut out such as eating so close to bedtime, eating so much, eating until my freaking stomach hurts, exercising more, etc.

The thing is what are some good exercises to help get to my goal? I play basketball for 1.5 hours 1-3 times a week but that really is the extent of my exercising. I would love to run/walk if that is a good way to burn lots of calories but I would also like to add muscle tone too. What is a good eating schedule and what are some healthy recipes and are there any ways to eat out but heathy and not just Subway or sandwichs?

I noticed you said stop "eating" so much, stop "eating" before bedtime. Have you thought about what you drink? Most people thing food is the main cause for their obesity. When really the number one culprit is soda and sugary drinks and of course beer.

Cut out the sodas and all sugar. Drink water and watch the weight drop.

Ah, all my years at Weight Watchers have taught me that DRINKING WATER will make you healthier and will make you lose weight. There's all kinds of different things you can try, of course eating better foods will assist you, but if you get in at leasr 3 hours of intense exercise per week and drink 60-80 oz of water a day, you should be able to lose 3-4 pounds a week.

Don't starve yourself. That's huge. Just eat til you are satisfied. And if it takes a lot to get to a point of satisfaction, eat filling but high fiber foods (such as Fiber One...best thing ever).

    i eat what the **** i want, when the **** i want.

if i want a three pound cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatos, pickles, onions, mustard, and then deep fried, i can do that.

if i want a 36 oz steak with a five pound potato loaded with a tub of butter, sour cream, and fatty cheese and bacon, deep fried, i can do that too.

if i want to eat a 17 head lettuce salad swimming in ranch, and deep fry it, i can do that too.

That's why I listed eating. I only drink water but occassionally mix in one of those Crystal Light flavor packets. I don't drink alcohol.

I have always heard that starving yourself actually keeps you from losing weight because your body shuts down somewhat so I know not to do that. What is Fiber One? Is that a diet supplement?

BTW, i think one of my biggest problems is eating not too long before I go to bed because I eat then I go through several hours of inactivity although I know you burn several hundred calories when you sleep enough hours. I think this is a big problem because I eat go to bed then wake up and eat again then go to class and then work, no real activity after ingesting all those calories.

Fiber one is cereal. I eat it every morning and throughout the day dry as a snack. It doesn't taste very good, but it keeps you full and keeps you regular. It also has good slow burning complex carbs.

I'm 5'10" and got as high as 250 a few years back...i started eating healthier and smaller (2-3 small meals a day, as little fast/restaurant food as possible) and tried to exercise daily. I lost as much as 65lbs. in about a six to eighth month span. You gotta stay strong and avoid the pitfalls of a bad diet and exercise; you do that the weight will drop easily.

Well according to the US govt, we all are lol. At 5'10 with a medium frame you should be around 175lbs.

That's what I'm shooting for too.

What exactly does this mean? I was going to try to run/walk everyday as well as well as doing some light exercising when I wake up too.

The quickest way to burn fat is to exercise in the AM on an empty stomach. Your body burns carbs for energy, if you don't have anything to burn then it will burn your fat. Running in the AM is tough, but it works.

Back to carbs. You use them for energy, that which you do not use gets stored as fat. So, do you need a bunch of energy before you go to bed? No. So cut out carbs before bedtime, actually after 6pm would work. And remember simple carbs (sugars, white breat, white potatoes, etc) get stored as fat more quickly than slower burning complex carbs (oats, wheat bread, sweet potatoes)

Sweet potatoes are better for you than white. Well, you learn something new everyday. :)

Well for example, I'm at the point where I do 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the cross trainer 3 days a week in my school's weight room. (In the fall/winter I try to jog outside). High intensity to me is a good cardio workout that gets your heart rate up and makes you sweat. I went from about 30 minutes a week a year ago to 3 hours a week. Building endurance is another good way to assist in weight loss and it seems to me that I have a better metabolism now than ever before.

    Oh yeah...WATER! :)

Eat as many friuts and vegetables as you can. Apple, bananna, pear, peach, pineapple, cucumber, carrot, celery, cabbage, and broccoli are good fat burners. Combine that with cardio such as running, swimming, cycling, and inline skating. Run holding a dumbbell on each hand not more than 5 pounds each if you can for a total body workout.

The trainer I had and my Dr. said there is no truth to this. They said the correlation between late night eating and weight gain is what you put in your body. No one eats a grilled chicken salad or oatmeal before you hit the sack. You eat a drumstick of fried chicken, the left over pizza from the night before, a handful of M&M's or you grab a spoon and the carton of ice cream. If you ate something relatively healthy like a apple, handful of peanuts or maybe some cereal you will be fine.
